A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management.

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are travelling any distance.

A guide for Artists and Promoters

The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to musicianlive2 at gmail.com once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

Doors 8:00pm
The Pat McManus Band are a powerful three piece blues/rock trio, headed up by the former Mama's Boys and Celtus guitarist/violinist virtuoso Pat McManus (AKA The Professor) who is joined by long time PMB member Paul Faloon on drums and Plunkett McComb on bass. In recent years Pat has been named as one of the top five top Irish guitarists of all time.

In the very early eighties, Pat formed Mama's Boys with his brothers John and Tommy and within a few years were touring worldwide and playing along with some of the giants of rock. They are perhaps best known for their hits 'Needle in the Groove' and their cover of Slade’s ‘Mama Weer All Crazy Now'. After the passing of younger brother Tommy, Pat and John formed 'Celtus' and were quickly signed by Sony and their music went on to win many awards.

In 2001 Pat decided to take a rest from recording and touring and returned to Ireland, but quickly became involved with other projects and bands. Around 2006 Pat decided to take a more serious approach and form his own rock/blues band and up to today, 7 original albums and 3 DVDs have followed. The band have continually toured over the last 15 years and the story goes on....

James Owston Trio
£14.00adv / £5 NUS
Doors 7:30pm
This exciting new trio brings together the creative minds of James Owston (bass), Alex Merritt (tenor saxophone) and Euan Palmer (drums). After forming in late 2021 for a concert at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall, the trio reformed in March 2023 for a performance at the Hexagon Theatre/MAC promoted by Fizzle. Sharing a strong musical connection, this trio sees James, Alex and Euan digging into a range of inspirations across a broad stylistic spectrum - bringing their unique approaches to the fore to create a very personal group dynamic, that is both highly energetic, interactive and engaging.

James Owston has fast become a well-known name on the UK jazz scene, notably through his work with Clark Tracey, Paul Dunmall, Neil Yates, Xhosa Cole, Alex Clarke, Martin Speake, Greg Abate and many more. This trio sees James take on the leadership role, allowing space for each musician’s stylistic input whilst also showcasing his own progressive and melodic approach to playing the bass. With firm roots in bebop and the jazz tradition, heavily influenced by Ray Brown, Charles Mingus, Scott La-Faro, Charlie Haden and other pioneering bassists, Owston also draws from his experience in modern and contemporary music in his approach to improvising and writing music. In 2018, James was a finalist in the BBC Young Jazz Musician Award and performed at the Queen Elizabeth hall with Gwilym Simcock and Asaf Sirkis.

Doors 7:30pm
West country based Gaz Brookfield is predominantly a solo acoustic musician. Although, on occasion, you will find him on stage with his band The Company of Thieves.

Since winning Acoustic Magazine’s 'Singer-Songwriter of the Year' in 2010, he has spent the last decade on the road, building a strong and loyal following all over the UK, and beyond.

He was the first independent musician to sell out Bristol's The Fleece (450 cap) and The Bierkeller (750 cap) - and, more recently, SWX (1000 cap).

With eight studio albums (the latest, Idiomatic, hitting #10 in the download charts) and seven live ones already under his belt, this fiercely independent musician continues to tour up and down the country. No manager, no record label, no agent - just a guitar, a van, and a steadfastly belligerent refusal to give in.

The Small Fakers
£12.00adv
Doors 7:30pm
The Small Faces are without any shadow of doubt, one of the most sensational British bands of the 1960s, and are as much a part of the soundtrack to the fabbest decade ever as The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks, The Who, or anyone else for that matter!

Hitting the charts as teenage mods with their very first disc, 'Whatcha Gonna Do About It', the four diminutive Cockneys went on to release numerous timeless classics including, ‘Sha-La-La-La-Lee’, ‘Here Come The Nice’, ‘Itchycoo Park’ and ‘Lazy Sunday’.

The Small Fakers were officially launched on a chilly night in February 2007 at a central London shindig attended by fans and associates of the East End's very own fab four, the seminal, sensational Small Faces. The buzz in the audience that night was intense. Could the SMALL FAKERS even hope to come close to replicating the sound, and the look, of the Small Faces.

The Cinelli Brothers is a project born out of a common passion for the electric Chicago and Texas blues from the 60s and 70s, when brothers Marco (guitarist and lead singer) and Alessandro (drummer) decided to form an explosive team showcasing original repertoire in the style of Chess, Stax and Motown. Joining the two brothers on stage, Stephen Giry on bass and Tom Julian-Jones on harmonica and guitar.

Their debut album Babe Please Set Your Alarm was recorded at the Soup Studio in London and the full live and analog recording was released in May 2018 on vinyl and digital format. The record went number 2 in the IBBA (Independent Blues Broadcasters' Association) in June 2018 and prompted features in Blues in Britain, Blues Matters, Classic Rock and other magazines, and a UK Blues Awards nomination for 'Blues Band Of The Year'.

Legendary radio and broadcaster David ‘Kid’ Jensen once played a different track from their album on six consecutive weeks of his United DJs radio show, naming them as his favourite blues outfit, and his favourite blues album in many years, and Music Republic Magazine nominated Marco Cinelli as 'Best Guitar Player of 2018'.

The Cinelli Brothers champion a new generation of passionate musicians sharing in the love of Blues, Soul, R&B and the true authentic sounds that have made the blues a cornerstone of music history.

Philip Seth Campbell

Doors 7:30pm
Hailing from Glasgow, Philip Seth Campbell has been releasing music since 1997. Having released a handful of records and EPs over the years, Campbell gave it all up in 2012 to join London-based rock band The Temperance Movement.

Having toured the world with the band and learnt how to sing, seven years on the road took its toll and The Temperance Movement came to an end in late 2019. A short while later Campbell formed a second, Glasgow-based band The Byson Family. The collaboration had been a long time coming and what started as a side project became a serious concern as they set about recording their debut album, which was released in 2020.

Having since released snapshots of solo material including the 2022 EP ‘Feel Again’, Philip Scott Campbell has been praised for his ability to channel a primal Springsteen howl one moment and evoke a tender Sam Cooke croon the next. With a shapeshifting sonic ability that means listeners are never quite sure which musical alley he’ll wander up next, Campbell’s songwriting is honest and unflinching, yet widescreen and cinematic at the same time.

Imbued with an innate sense of musicality — and with a voice so uniquely classic it’s hard not to love — Campbell is a musician’s musician, and one who is now calling on past experience to look to the future. A man with stories to tell and songs that need to be sung, Philip Seth Campbell’s unique sound is perhaps more urgent now than ever.

With ‘City Lights’ set to land on 1 September, the album will be available to pre-order from 2 June 2023.

MICHAEL MORROW & THE CULPRITS sound could be described as Hard Rock Countryfied Blues. An American Rock Band, hailing from Colorado, deliver the goods when it comes to that bluesy hard rock with a touch of twang undoubtedly coming from that Big Red Gretsch guitar Michael is known for playing over the years. That tone matched with his voice is distinctive. Influenced from bands like The Beatles, Aerosmith, KISS you can hear that melody and strut matter.

Who brings a big show anymore? When possible, they do. Putting on a visual show is part of the experience. A little bit of that 80s influence rubbing off I suppose.

The Enid

Doors 8:00pm
The Enid began recording at about the same time as punk rock burst upon the music scene. Founding member Robert John Godfrey has said that he always regarded The Enid's ironic takes on classical music as being just as anarchic as anything by the Sex Pistols, but this did not translate into either musical or commercial recognition, despite their work being played frequently by Tommy Vance on BBC Radio One's Friday Rock Show. However, unique among progressive rock bands, the Enid secured a fan base which significantly overlapped with the punk rock fan base. Thanks largely to their quirky appearance and stage act, they built a sizable campus following even while under the shadow of the punk movement, which has endured to this day.

Not since the 1980 has the band had two virtuoso guitarists, and the wonderful Alfredo Randazzo now compliments Jason Ducker on guitar, with Karl Thompson on drums alongside of course, leader, composer and pianist Robert John Godfrey.

Formed during the pandemic, it features The Jim Jones Revue members Gavin Jay and Elliot Mortimer, drummer Chris Ellul from (The Heavy), veteran punk guitarist Carlton Mounsher (The Swamps), and a full horn section.

After a midnight offering at the real crossroads in Clarksdale, Mississippi, the band made the pilgrimage to Memphis, Tennessee to record with Memphis Magnetic founder Scott McEwen (JD McPherson, Nick Waterhouse) in May of 2022.

A dancefloor killer that's an ode to getting over/getting it easy/getting it...period, ‘Gimme The Grease’ is the third single from the album “Ain’ No Peril” recorded there and it’s impossible not to feel that Southern alchemy oozing from this music.

“When you’re recording within spitting distance of the Mississippi river, there’s something about that heavy Memphis air that changes the way that you hear the groove and grind,” says Jim Jones. ‘Gimme The Grease’ captures that feeling and bathes in that magic."

Over the last few years, Chantel has received great reviews of her 5 albums, the last 2 being released during the 2021 Covid lockdown. Chris Brain renders songs embedded in folk tradition with a contemporary resonance. Hailing from Yorkshire, Brain finds inspiration from pastoral landscape and soaring figures from the natural world.

He released his debut, critically acclaimed and widely distributed album, Bound to Rise, in 2022. Capturing 10 live performances of enthralling meditations on nature with glimpses of the confessional, Bound to Rise was driven by his distinctive fingerpicked guitar and warm vocals. Now working on a second album to be released at the start of October 2023 and to be toured nationally in October/November 2023.

Daily Express - ‘A gentle, intoxicating debut album by Yorkshire folkie Brain. He’s a superb fingerpick- ing guitarist whose soft vocal will immediately bring comparisons with Nick Drake, while his playing style bears comparison with another late legend, John Martyn. The themes of nature, sunshine and flight in tracks like Bound To Rise, Flying On Time and Peace & Quiet allow him to create an enchanting introduction.’

Yorkshire Post - ‘Leeds-based Chris Brain specialises in songs full of bucolic imagery to which his balmy voice with shades of John Martyn, Nick Drake and Colin Blunstone and intricate fingerpicking are ideally suited.’
