A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management.

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are travelling any distance.

A guide for Artists and Promoters

The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to musicianlive2 at gmail.com once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

Ida Wenøe + Samantha Whates
£10.00adv £12.00door
Doors 8:00pm
Ida Wenøe is revelling in the critical success of her latest album, the beautifully put-together 'The Things We Don't Know Yet'. With airplay still flooding in from national and regional BBC stations, particularly for her brand new single 'Change Me A Little', she is building her UK audience quite nicely and with good reason, as she blends her Nordic Noir heritage with hints of Americana and English folk. To list artists she sounds like would be to miss the point entirely - as anyone who has witnessed a live show can attest, Ida Wenøe is very definitely Ida Wenøe.

“Ida Wenøe is equal parts mysterious, brooding & beguiling” - R2 Magazine

“Her voice - weary but cute, with the power to cut through - is perfect” – The Guardian

Samantha Whates is London-based and has been there since her teens, but her heart, voice and songs retain a strong affinity with her Scottish roots, cultivating a sound that is thoroughly contemporary, rooted in tradition yet uniquely her own.

A regular live performer, Samantha has played throughout the UK from small town pubs to large festivals and major London venues (Union Chapel, Cecil Sharp House, Tate Modern, Royal Festival Hall, Roundhouse). Her debut album, ‘Dark Nights Make For Brighter Days’ & EP ‘Trees & Gold’, enjoyed both critical acclaim and radio play (BBC 6 Music, Radio 2, KCRW, Resonance FM).

"Just gorgeous" - Tom Robinson, BBC 6Music

"Her songs are hauntingly beautiful” - Kathryn Williams

Bird In The Belly
£5.00adv £6.00door
plus Steve Parker, Weikie and Dani Matty
Doors 7:30pm - 10:30pm
Bird in the Belly is a Brighton-based folk group consisting of folk-duo Hickory Signals (Laura Ward and Adam Ronchetti), alt-folk singer-songwriter Ben Webb (Jinnwoo, Green Ribbons), and multi-instrumentalist and producer Tom Pryor. Together they collect little known and forgotten lyrics, poems and stories from around the UK, and set them to their own “hypnotically original compositions” (fRoots).

Their sound is raw and bare-boned with “distinctively contemporary and earthy vocalising” (R2 Magazine) – and harks back to the 1960s Folk Revival sound.

Their debut album ‘The Crowing’ (March 2018, GF*M Records) was met with critical acclaim across the board from fRoots, R2, Songlines, Louder Than War, Northern Sky, Folk Radio UK, as well as the Sunday Express giving the album 5/5 and calling it folk album of the year.
Bird in the Belly’s gig highlights include Manchester Folk Festival (English Folk Expo showcase), Leigh Folk Festival, Tooting Folk Club and Ropetackle Arts Centre, Brighton’s Toy Museum Folk Club, Purbeck Valley Folk Festival, Gate to Southwell Festival, Warwick Folk Festival and Mosely Folk Festival.

Alongside this, the group has been working on a feature length documentary to support the album, interviewing the likes of June Tabor, Frankie Armstrong, Stick in the Wheel, Fellside Record, Rootbeat Records, Ian Anderson (fRoots Editor), Lisa Knapp, Gerry Diver, Naomi Bedford and The Rails about the contemporary folk scene.

The group is back with their much anticipated second album "Neighbours and Sisters", released in October 2019.

Jeremy Tuplin Band
£10.00adv £12.00door
Doors 8:00pm - 11:00pm
Jeremy Tuplin, a Somerset-raised, London-living musician, is a singer-songwriter in the very essence of the term, incorporating intricate lyricism and storytelling within a soundscape ranging from indie to psychedelic to “space”-folk. In 2019 he released ‘Pink Mirror’ on Trapped Animal Records to widespread acclaim, and a new record is rumoured to be out in 2020. Although still playing the occasional stripped-back solo show, these days he mostly fronts his own band called The Ultimate Power Assembly.

Folk Radio UK - "an idiosyncratic, fiercely independent singer-songwriter with a knack for melodic hooks, wryly observant lyrics and a unique sonic vision"

For The Rabbits - "an honest, exciting and entirely compelling record"

Clash Music - “A cosmic gem”

The Telegraph Culture - “A distinctive, deep vocal that has hints of Leonard Cohen and Bill Callahan”

BBC 6 Music – Tom Robinson – "Unconventional, conversational and intimate”
Music Match UK - "Wonderfully weird"

Boomtown Festival – “One of the founding fathers of the lesser known genre of space folk”

The Magpies
£10.00adv £12.00door
plus Greenman Rising
Doors 8:00pm - 11:00pm
The Magpies formed in their hometown of York in the autumn of 2017. Initially a duo project between Bella Gaffney (Celtic Connections Danny Kyle Award winner) and acclaimed mandolin player Polly Bolton, 2018 saw the lineup expand to a quartet, with the original pair joining forces with renowned cellist Sarah Smout and fiddle ace Holly Brandon. After a busy 18 months, the quartet is already establishing a fearsome reputation for their glittering live shows, onstage rapport and genre-busting original and traditional material.

Based on a deeply felt musical friendship, they work collaboratively, arranging material led by powerful vocals and instrumental compositions. They each draw on their transatlantic influences to create a unique blend of Celtic and bluegrass folk, transporting audiences to distant lands and capturing imaginations with their enthralling live show.

Over the summer of 2018 they were exceptionally well received, performing at festivals such as Cambridge Folk Festival, main stage at Wickham Festival, Towersey Festival, Deer Shed Festival, Grassington and a sold out EP release show at The Great Yorkshire Fringe. The first transatlantic trip for the band took place in February 2019, when they performed at Folk Alliance International in Montreal.

The summer of 2019 has seen them perform at many more festivals including Glastonbury, Larmer Tree, Warwick main stage and Shambala, whilst recording their debut full band album for release in early 2020 (album release tour March 2020).

"A natural chemistry... all three voices blend and harmonise beautifully... the mix of styles offers so much promise." Folk Radio UK

“Very well liked by the punters! A proper hit.” Bev Burton, Cambridge Folk Festival

The four members of Fred Zeppelin are real fans of the originals, and formed ‘The Fredz’ out of their admiration and love of Led Zeppelin’s music. As their name suggests, the band do not take themselves too seriously - they know the praise belongs to Robert, Jimmy, John Paul Jones, and Bonzo, but they aim to do justice to the music and they certainly achieve that.

The band’s rhythm section consists of Andy Boulton on bass & Tom Walker on drums, who (along with Manning) have been playing together for almost twenty five years.
As of 2017 the band have been frequently joined on stage by highly accomplished musician & good friend Tony Robinson; who provides organ, piano, & trumpet. Over the years Tony has worked with a number of popular artists including: The Beautiful South, The Specials, & Manic Street Preachers.
The DG’s are a band who pride themselves on their retro rock-n-roll approach to live performances and original material which seamlessly bridges the gaps between blues, rock, & Americana.

Josienne Clarke

plus Autumn Dawn Leader
Doors 8:00pm
When Josienne Clarke signed to the illustrious independent music champions Rough Trade Records, its founder Geoff Travis told The Guardian that she writes, ‘songs that rearrange your internal emotional landscape… reinventing the popular song structure’.

With a rare gift for poetic melancholy, Josienne’s songs have also been described as ‘extraordinary’ (Mojo), ‘gently exquisite’ (The Observer) and ‘full of depth’ (The Telegraph). While the world music bible Songlines said, ’Clarke’s dark, complex imagery in the lyrics pushes the songs into rich metaphorical territory, one of the heart and of self-enquiry’. American Songwriter magazine named Josienne one of the best songwriters of 2016.

With several new records and theatrical productions to look forward to, Josienne Clarke remains one of the most impressive, accomplished and downright heart-breaking singers, lyricists and composers we’ve got.

Doors 8:00pm
A self-confessed devotee of real music, Manchester’s Robbie Cavanagh writes unscrubbed, heartfelt Americana but at the same time is not defined by genres.

The only rules are good musicians, real instruments, great microphones and performance with emotion. Capturing sound, not producing it. Robbie performs self-penned, raw tales of heartbreak, loss, love and discovery, and when he puts pen to paper, he lives by his own words. The more you wrestle with an idea, the more contrived it becomes. Robbie writes with honesty, emotion, and most importantly; instinct.

In November 2020, it was announced that Robbie would be the recipient of Bob Harris ‘Emerging Artist Award’ at the Americana Music Association UK Awards 2021.

Ann Duggan
£6.00adv £8.00door
Doors 8:00pm
The pairing of powerhouse vocalist Annie Duggan with exceptional guitarist Rob Hines is a match made in … well, possibly Clarksdale Mississippi or Nashville Tennessee, or the backwoods of Alabama. Take your pick, but the ‘roots’ of their music undoubtedly originate from the diverse strands of blues, country, folk and jazz that combine in the melting pot of ‘Americana’.

To classify their music as one or other of these genres would be to do them a disservice, as their mastery of each and all is palpably plain to witness in their performance.

Annies voice is both powerful and expressive, encompassing the grit and growl of the blues, the more mellow tones of country music, and the subtlety of the jazz stylists. She employs all of these devices within her repertoire, including standard classics from those genres, and original compositions from the pen of erstwhile collaborator Colin Granger.
The empathy between Annie and guitarist Rob Hines is all encompassing, and his impressive technique allows him to employ both rhythmic subtlety and impressive interjectory extemporisations in his accompaniments. His solo excursions are truly amazing, the powerful propulsive drive of the country bluesman in tandem with the Scotty Moore ‘Sun Sound’ Elvis era rockabilly ‘licks’, and an occasional hint of Spanish flamenco, a truly amazing combination of influences finding a home in his one man guitar ‘orchestra’!

Lucy Bremridge will be opening the evening for Annie Duggan and Rob Hines performing her own songs and those of people who have influenced her. Already taking the music circuit by storm.

She will also be performing with two of the most seasoned performers bringing a fresh and different show to the Musician. Lucy is already gaining a name for herself on the music circuit writing her own material but also ably delivering classics that sit well will the original Country, Blues and Roots music that Annie and Rob are known for.

Since joining forces the duo have become one of the most sought after acts on the folk scene touring extensively in the UK, Denmark, Germany, France, Spain, Belgium and The Netherlands. Their fourth and latest (2018) studio album, Utopia & Wasteland, was described as ‘a big step forward’ (RnR Magazine), established them as ‘the golden boys of Brit-Folk’ (MOJO) and raised the pair to being ‘one of the most exciting duos in any genre’ (FRUK).
