A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management.

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are travelling any distance.

A guide for Artists and Promoters

The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to musicianlive2 at gmail.com once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

CasbahMMP Presents Broken Witt Rebels.
Blues rockers Broken Witt Rebels were with us in Leicester last July but they've had a busy year since. Winning the Unsigned Music Awards for Best Rock Act; Tours with Joanne Shaw Taylor; King King and Kaleo and more recently a sold out co-headline Planet Rock Roadstars tour with Bad Touch (also coming back to The Musician 14th July).
We are very pleased to have secured them for this one off gig before they take on some festival dates and then head of to the USA. Highly unlikely that they will be playing many more small venue gigs after that so you may want to take this opportunity whilst you can.

A young band who are starting to make some noise on the gig circuit recently winning an opportunity to open for Carl Barat after their blistering performance live at Pirate Studios. Please get there early to see these guys, we promise you will not be diasppointed.

The Abrams

It’s hard for John and James Abrams to recall a time in their young lives where they weren’t creating and playing music together. As fourth-generation musicians, The Abrams have taken the “family business” to a whole new level with their recent signing to Warner Music Canada and major label self-titled debut EP. The Abrams is a departure from their earlier work, spurred by Gavin Brown – the Juno award-winning and Grammy nominated producer. Brown (Billy Talent, Metric, Three Days Grace) took it as a personal challenge to bring out the best in The Abrams and introduce them to a broader audience. The resulting EP does indeed make an indelible first impression, yet is only a taste of what The Abrams and Brown have created together. Knowing now what they can accomplish in the studio, and how to translate that to the stage, The Abrams are fully prepared to take a place alongside Canada’s best-known country music stars.

Terry turned down the front man’s job with Led Zeppelin, recommending his mate Robert Plant instead, a similar offer and rebuff to Deep Purple. Aretha Franklin’s stated that The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Terry Reid were the best England had to offer in 1968. He underwent two World Tours with The Rolling Stones, US tours with Cream, UK tours with Jethro Tull and Fleetwood Mac, The Isle of White Festival in 1969 and Glastonbury in 1970, played at Mick Jagger’s wedding, before soured record deals resulted in Terry leaving Britain for America nearly 40 years ago.

All true, but the full story includes numerous collaborations with Graham Nash, covers of Reid songs by Marianne Faithfull, The Hollies, The Raconteurs (the hugely popular ‘Rich Kid Blues’), film soundtracks, including a song in George Clooney’s recent film ‘Up In The Air’, and a catalogue of 6 studio albums, including the seminal album ‘The River’, re-released to critical acclaim in 2002 and the 1976 Nash produced ‘Seed of Memory’. A Reid song ‘Horses Through a Rainstorm’ also features on CSN’s box set.

Chris Smither

feat: Katy Rose Bennett
Doors 8:00pm - 11:00pm
You'll be hard pushed to find a better acoustic guitar player than the legendary Chris Smither. You'll also be hard pushed to find anyone who writes songs quite like his. Last years tribute album to him, Link Of Chain, pulled in the lieks of Bonnie Raitt, Loudon Wainwright, Dave Alvin and Mary Gauthierso which shows the high esteem in which he is held. His last visit to Leicester in 2015 was one of the gigs of the year and this one will be no different.

Katy Rose Bennett's Songs Of The River Rea was one of the under the radar delights of 2016. Her pastoral folk songs, mixed with a bit of jazz and a hint of pop, paint delicate and subtle pictures of "ordinary" lives that are anything but and her live sets are quietly delightful.

Emma Stevens

2017 sees the hugely talented British singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Emma Stevens release and tour her third album To My Roots.
Life has been something of a whirlwind for the down to earth surfer chick from Guildford, since embarking on a solo career in 2012 and bursting onto the scene with her distinctively catchy pop melodies, fused with folk instrumentation and a touch of country. The increasing popularity of this uniquely versatile “what you see is what you get” artist is now undeniable, thanks to almost three million Spotify plays, and over a million video views on the back of four EP and two album releases, with four consecutive singles playlisted by Radio 2.
Emma’s voice is emotive, clear, effortless and uplifting. She has toured seven times (including three headline tours), performed at numerous festivals including Hyde Park, CarFest and Country2Country, and supported Simply Red, Passenger and Train.
Hailed as “Just Magical” by the late great Sir Terry Wogan, an early supporter of her music, Emma performed live sessions on his Weekend Wogan show three times. Embraced by the BBC Introducing initiative, she went on to perform to a crowd of 40,000 at the BBC’s Festival in a Day at Hyde Park.

Jonathan Byrd and Pick Up Cowboy

JONATHAN BYRD is “one of the top 50 songwriters of the last 50 years,” says Rich Warren of WFMT in the Chicago Tribune. Scott Alarik of the Boston Globe says, “This rootsy North Carolinian may be the most buzzed-about new songwriter in folkdom. He displays John Prine’s gift for stark little songs that tell big, complex stories, Guy Clark’s lean melodicism, Lyle Lovett’s wry mischief, and Bill Morrissey’s knack for the revealing image.” Byrd grew up singing in the Southern Baptist church, where his father preached and his mother played piano. After four years in the Navy, he returned to home to play in rock bands. It was at an old-time fiddle festival in the mountains of southwest Virginia where his writing began to change. Assimilating the sounds of southern traditional music, Byrd wrote new songs in an ancient style. After 10 years as a full-time touring songwriter and 7 acclaimed albums, it seems this native of Cackalacky is getting the attention he deserves. After the positive reaction to his last years tour Jonathan is back in June with his Pickup Cowboy Johnny Waken and it is not to be missed.

Darlingside are doing something new in pop music, which is kind of astonishing this late in the game (ground the Beach Boys, Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Prince, Phish, and Radiohead didn't cover is hard to find.)" – The Boston Herald

Darlingside (Don Mitchell, Auyon Mukharji, Harris Paseltiner, and David Senft) are a Massachusetts-based ensemble whose sound is an eclectic blend of 60s folk, clever wry wit, classical arrangements, soaring harmonies, and a modern indie-rock sensibility. The four vocalists and multi-instrumentalists construct every piece collaboratively, pooling ideas so that each song bears the imprint of four different writing voices. Playful vocal permutations swing from four-part unison to CSNY-inspired group harmonies, underpinned by rich, carefully crafted soundscapes. The final product threads the collective memory of the four songwriters, nodding to the music of their parents’ generation while establishing a sound that is all their own.

£15.00adv
While traveling in Peru at age 32, Sam Baker took a train ride that would change his life. On a clear cool morning in Cuzco in the summer of 1986, Sam boarded a passenger train that was blown up minutes later by terrorists. Initially, seven died. The dead included a German boy and his parents who were sitting with Baker in the car. Baker survived, but with lasting damage- deafness, a mangled hand, a mangled leg, and brain damage affecting speech and memory. At 55, words are still occasionally unremembered, requiring extensive search. However, during these searches, he finds other words. From these other words, he finds other stories. And with these stories come characters from other places and times.
