A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management.

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are travelling any distance.

A guide for Artists and Promoters

The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to musicianlive2 at gmail.com once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

Coming to The Musician in September 2016

Thu 1st Sep 2016
Chicken Head Lounge presents
Free
feat: Southbound and Hillbilly Jukebox
Doors 8:00pm
Its a 'hoe-down' special in the Lounge this time around.
Time to dust off your dancin boots and sort out that check shirt.
Two live bands playing all your favourite cover songs in two very different styles.
First up 'Hillbilly Jukebox', classic pop and rock covers played in a redneck style.

The main act are Derby favourites 'Southbound'.. a kicking five piece band who play a lively mixture of Country Rock and Americana.

Think Austin Texas not Nashville. It's music with an edge and a backbeat that rocks. Talented, multi-instrumentalists playing great songs
with classy three part harmonies and tasty solos. Songs by the likes of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Johnny Cash, Old Crow Medicine Show and Hank Williams with some Everly Brothers, Chuck Berry and blistering bluegrass banjo solos thrown in for good measure. Classic Honky Tonk!

Dizzy Lizzy

Doors 8:00pm
First set 8.30pm

Dizzy Lizzy are a fantastic live tribute act, dedicated to the legendary Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy. Established in 1994, their sound and set-list faithfully recreate that trademark Lizzy sound. Philomena Lynott once stated that Dizzy Lizzy are “the closest to playing my son’s music'”. The band do indeed have an amazing sound and resemblance to the classic 70s and 80s rock band, taking you back in time to relive that magical musical era with a superb blend of classic foot stomping rock anthems and emotive ballads.

One of the country's most dynamic tribute acts, they are the only act to have headlined both the ‘Vibe for Philo’ in Dublin & ‘Remember Phil & Gary’ event in Holland. They have also performed and toured with original Thin Lizzy guitarist Eric Bell whose reaction on first seeing the band was telling. “I could only watch three numbers owing to the emotions. The resemblance to Phil and the mannerisms and playing, it was spooky – it made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck…”

It’s not easy to hold an unclouded mirror up to the world. The temptation to fog up truths or angle them in ways that are less painful is nigh irresistible. To look at things as they are - warts and all, good and bad - requires a brave heart and sturdy constitution. To then stir that honest stuff into songs that communicate successfully to others is rarer still. This is what Oakland, CA-based singer-songwriter John Murry does with clear-eyed, unsentimental efficiency. Cut from the same cloth as Elliott Smith, Lou Reed, Jeff Tweedy and Darkness On The Edge of Town-era Springsteen, Murry faces what he sees in the glass unflinchingly and then turns the mirror on us in ways that allow one to see their own reflection in sharper focus.

10th Anniversary Tour

First set ‘My Secret is my Silence’ & second set a mixture of material

A native of Irvine – small-town Scotland writ large – Roddy co-founded Idlewild in 1995, naming the band for the quiet haven featured in his then-favourite book, Anne of Green Gables. Given that the NME likened their early punk-fuelled sound – deftly revisited on their latest album, 2007’s Make Another World – to “a flight of stairs falling down a flight of stairs”, the quiet haven part was initially somewhat ironic, but gradually came closer as Idlewild meanwhile progressed through sweeping melodic rock to rootsy, melodic sparseness. Extending that softer lyrical vein of Roddy’s songwriting, 2006 saw his first solo release, My Secret Is My Silence, winning rave reviews across both the rock and folk press. He was also a key instigator behind the acclaimed 2007 album Ballads of the Book, bringing together leading Scottish poets and musicians to collaborate on new songs. After extensive recent touring with Idlewild, Roddy will be spending much of 2008 – as every other year – scribbling observations and lyrics in his notebook while out on walks.

Since being formed by brothers Andrew & Jamie Pipe in late 2008, award winning British rock band The Mentulls have carved out a niche for themselves on the international rock scene. With music critics calling them “a band to watch now and for years to come”, “so talented, so good” and “the future of prog rock” the band have earned a reputation for blending original, emotive, bluesy classic rock with progressive rock instrumentality played with gusto and energy.
As well as recording three albums to date, the band have toured internationally and opened for a plethora of big-name artists including Wishbone Ash, Focus, Walter Trout and Dr Feelgood among many others. In addition, they have made many large festival appearances sharing the stage with the likes of The Stranglers and Feeder.
The band and its members have won and been nominated for numerous awards including Young Artist of The Year in ‘The British Blues Awards’ two years running in 2012 & 2013.
Now, in 2019 after a short break away from the live arena Andrew, Jamie and long-time drummer Nick Colman are joined on vocals by David Neil Crabtree, who brings a new soulful dimension to the band.

Fleetingwood Mac
£11.00adv
Doors 8:00pm
Fleetingwood Mac are a young and exciting new tribute to the legendary band Fleetwood Mac. They didn’t set out to be yet another tribute band, with tacky wigs and fancy dress outfits, but instead bring across the live sound of Fleetwood Mac, with just one guitar, a keyboard, a drum kit, a man on the bass and of course, the vocals!

As much as they aim to create a genuine Fleetwood Mac sound, they can’t help but give it a modern edge, it’s just the way they play. How else are five people supposed to play tribute to a band that have lasted nearly 50 years? A band who over time have featured eight different guitarists & vocalists. A band that started out as part of the sixties British Blues Invasion and ended up as one of the biggest mainstream groups of the eighties.

The band aim to introduce the songs to a new generation of fans, who just like themselves, weren’t even born when the band were in their prime. They don’t go on stage pretending to be Fleetwood Mac, instead as five young musicians who love and want to share the music of one of the world's greatest bands to a wider audience.

John Butler

Doors 8:00pm
Tonight's show features a solo performance from the lead singer and lyricist of Diesel Park West. The Diesel's 1989 release 'Shakespeare Alabama' was a record denied it's due place in the upper echelons of rock 'n' roll but gave an early indication that here was someone able to craft songs of such quality, comparable to the likes of Ray Davies, Marriott/Lane, Townshend and perhaps even Young and Zimmerman.

With the songs and that voice, John's solo acoustic gigs demonstrate all the inherent musical qualities of the songs he wrote, delivered with an engaging wit and insight only someone with intimate knowledge of the real music business could possibly know. Performances wrapped up in a humorous and insightful delivery, not afraid to enter the dark zone whilst offering consummate skill in doing so. A John Butler night is well worth checking out!

The inimitable Willie Nile returns to the Musician following the release of his acclaimed new album 'World War Willie'. The new dozen song set lives up to Nile’s reputation as a world-class songwriter, a singularly energetic performer and a true rock 'n' roll believer. Currently in the fourth decade of a recording career that has yielded a panoply of musical riches, the New York-bred artist is currently experiencing an exciting renaissance at a time when many of his contemporaries are winding down or giving up.

Willie's fans include Bruce Springsteen, with whom he’s guested onstage on multiple occasions, and Pete Townshend, who personally requested him as the opening act on the Who’s 1982 US tour. Other avowed Nile admirers include Bono, Lou Reed, Paul Simon, Ian Hunter, Graham Parker, Jim Jarmusch, Adam Duritz, Little Steven and Lucinda Williams, who once remarked: “Willie Nile is a great artist. If there was any justice in this world, I’d be opening up for him instead of him for me.”
