A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management.

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are travelling any distance.

A guide for Artists and Promoters

The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to musicianlive2 at gmail.com once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

Doors 8:00pm - 11:00pm
The Lovely Eggs are an underground punk rock duo from northern England. They have a fierce punk rock ethos that music should have no rules. For Holly and David being in a band is a way of life. True to this, they live the way they play. Fiercely, constantly in search of the good times.

With observational and often surreal lyrics about life The Lovely Eggs have a powerful stripped down sound: one vintage guitar amp, one Big Muff distortion pedal, a guitar and a drum kit.

With releases in the UK, Europe, USA and Japan, The Lovely Eggs have played hundreds of gigs around the UK, USA and Europe supporting the likes of Half Japanese, Shonen Knife, The Slits, The Television Personalities and Art Brut as well as a two month tour of America and a string of dates at SXSW in Austin, Texas.

"You won't hear another band like this anywhere between now and the the end of the millenium. The Lovely Eggs are just brilliant!" - Huw Stephens, Radio One

8/10 Spin “Over the last decade, Cincinnati garage/pop/folk practitioners Wussy have refined a winning formula. Every 15 months or so, they break from full-time jobs (stonemasonry, waitressing, special ed), record a dozen-ish songs, play some clubs, then return to their 9 to 5s. Many an indie band can claim a similar bio, but few match the songwriting consistency of former Ass Pony Chuck Cleaver and formerly unaffiliated Lisa Walker.”

5/5 Artrocker “I’m suprised Wussy are not more maistream. If they’re producing music as beautiful and well constructed as that featured on this newest album-then everyone should be aware of and appreciate their talent.”

"When I finally got to see them live, I was transformed into a hysterical nine-year-old girl at a Beatles concert.” Kurt Cobain

Shonen Knife are a ground-breaking all-female Japanese, pop-punk rock trio formed in Osaka in 1981, when Naoko Yamana first heard late ‘70’s punk-pop, particularly The Ramones. Inspired, the band crafted their own idiosyncratic songs, fashioned brightly coloured outfits and DIY albums. In 1985, K Records released ‘Burning Farm’ in the United States. Deals with Sub Pop and various majors followed. 1989 saw the crème of the alt. rock scene (including Sonic Youth, L7 and Redd Kross) covering their favourite Shonen Knife songs on the tribute album ‘Every Band Has A Shonen Knife Who Loves Them’. They toured with Nirvana (on the ‘Nevermind’ tour), The Breeders, as part of Lollapalooza, wowed the Reading Festival and Roskilde, recorded sessions for John Peel and appeared on MTV’s ‘Beavis and Butthead’. The band returned to the UK after a gap of 16 years in 2009 and since toured regularly throughout Europe gaining many generations of fans.

2016 will be the band’s 35th year of rock and will see them release their 20th studio album. With no signs of slowing down, Naoko continues to say: “Let’s Rock!”.

Doors 7:30pm - 11:00pm
The Silver Threetles are more than a tribute to The Beatles, they are an in depth appreciation of Beatles music. A homage. The Silver Threetles came out of the desire to see The Beatles perform again. How would The Beatles deliver those songs after all this time?

There's millions of Beatles tributes, dressing up and recreating the records. The Silver Threetles decided that they wanted to focus solely on the music, noodling with the songs until they felt new and different.

"The challenge is to keep the essence of the song, whilst giving them a playful fresh coat of paint."

The Silver Threetles have created a unique series of shows that give the audience a breathtaking Beatles experience, paying tribute to music, but also adding a huge amount of energy to the perfoermcance. You can expect more than just a Beatles tribute band. This is an event.

Knifeworld
£9.00adv £11.00door
Doors 8:00pm - 11:30pm
While working on the, ultimately doomed, follow-up to The Monsoon Bassoon’s I Dig Your Voodoo in early 2000, Kavus Torabi opened his badpalm to reveal an awkward handful. Songs that didn’t quite fit. Too personal, too singular, TOO PERSUASIVE.
Whatever inroads made into the first tentative steps of ‘self-production’ were soon trampled upon by the formation of an exciting new outfit with songwriting partner Dan Chudley (Initially called Miss Helsinki then later Authority).
These so-called inroads came further to tarmac and three-lane, what with Torabi’s joining of Cardiacs in 2003 and Guapo in 2005.
Following Chudley’s retreat from London (E) and inspired by a somewhat improved studio setup, The Cop’s Dream, work did finally resume in 2007 on the project now named Knife World or, if you’d prefer, Knifeworld.
Although the bulk of the parts were cack-handedly stumbled by the increasingly hubristic Torabi, gifted friends were bullied into a suitable performance. These included Melanie Woods, Sarah Measures, Ben Jacobs, Katharine Blake and James Larcombe.
To launch the release, a live band was astonished. In addition to the Melanie Woods and Khyam Allamis, Emmett Elvin and Chloe Herington were joined on keyboards and saxophone/ bassoon (respectively). Both musicians were of Chrome Hoof, a group with whom Torabi was involved as guitarist. Craig Fortnam played his wife’s bass guitar. (Fortnam had been part of Authority, while Torabi and Woods were involved in North Sea Radio Orchestra, Fortnam’s ‘core project’.)
Following ir/regular live shows in the UK, this version of Knifeworld released the EP Dear Lord, No Deal in 2011 (Recorded in the purpose built Skyhenge studio)
Necessity insisted a new rhythm section be invented and thank all the half-imagined deities it did. Drummer Ben Woollacott and bassist Charlie Cawood was it.
Torabi had already played with Woollacott for the previous threeyear in Mediaeval Baebes. Cawood was a friend of Allami. He was considered ‘young blood’ by the older members of the band, or if you must, Youngblood.
The remaining Allami drum tracks for what would have been the second album were used for the Clairvoyant Fortnight EP in 2012.
Already a six piece, Chloe Herington’s beautifully stacked parts on Clairvoyant Fortnight were too persuasive to leave out, so in casting both logic and practicality to the wind and then casting reason to the fates, Knifeworld expanded to an eight piece with the addition of horn players Josh Perl and Nicki Maher. Both is also singing and Perl he adds the acoustic guitar?
In December 2012 having spent the summer performing live, work began on The Unravelling. Conceived as an eight-part song cycle and composed specifically for this line up, the recording took most of 2013 to complete. As a ‘taster’ of what to expect Knifeworld shot a video and made available the sprawling Don’t Land On Me in the summer of that year. It was this video that came to the attention of InsideOut Music who, through a mutual friend Mike Vennart, made contact with the band and offered a record deal. A most unexpected and welcome surprise. The unwelcome accept.
The Unravelling was mixed by the remarkable Bob Drake and released in July 2014.
Tonight the band will performing songs from their latest album Bottled Out Of Eden.

Phillip Henry & Hannah Martin
£11.00adv
feat: Kyle Carey
Doors 8:00pm
Winners of 2014's BBC Radio Two Folk Award for Best Duo, Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin, have come a long way on their journey.

In 2009, Phillip, one of the UK's finest slide guitarists and harmonica players, moved into a tent in south Devon. He had his tent, his car, and a five year plan to earn a living through his music. He met Devonian fiddle-singer Hannah Martin, and the pair instantly recognised a very powerful musical connection. The pair's first album, Singing The Bones, was released in 2011 to warm praise. Their second studio album, Mynd, was released to great acclaim in September 2013, appearing in end of year best-ofs for The Guardian, The Telegraph, fRoots Critics Poll, Mark Radcliffe's Radio Two Top Ten, and Songlines. They were voted Best Duo at the Radio Two Folk Awards almost exactly five years since Phillip sat in his tent and made his plan!

The alchemy of Martin's ever evocative songwriting, fiddle and banjo playing and the much extolled skills of Henry on dobro, harmonica and lap steel fuse into a wholly distinctive world sound - songs of lament, tunes of hope, and totally unpredictable twist and turn music.

"One of the best duos on the planet" - Mike Harding

Kyle Carey will be making her third visit to Leicester, having previous played with Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker. A singer of Gaelic Americana, she has, in Mike Harding's words, "a voice to die for" and both hr albums have been acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic.

'Please be assured that this is no tribute band.

“Exquisite. The Law of Large Numbers never comes across cloyingly, its content ably handled and express with the same cliche-free purity The Delgados mastered” BBC

“Pollock has rediscovered the former band’s grandiose esoterica and stark, scratchy danger” NME [8/10]

Following the disbandment of The Delgados in 2005, the band Emma co-founded with her three fellow Chemikal Underground starter-uppers (Paul Savage, Alun Woodward, Stewart Henderson), Emma released her solo debut ‘Watch The Fireworks’ on 4AD. Returning to Chemikal for her next solo outing ‘The Law of Large Numbers‘ in 2010, Emma picked up more plaudits and acclaim for her unique brand of lavishly lyrical songwriting.

Then? Well, stints developing the Fruit Tree Foundation alongside Idlewild’s Rod Jones and playing a central role in The Burns Unit (who performed on Later…With Jools Holland) proved more than a little diverting since it’s been five and a half years since we had a new body of work. Until now that is as her new solo album ‘In Search of Harperfield‘ is scheduled for January 29th 2016.

Thank fuck we say: it’s about time. You can’t spend all your days running a recording studio Emma, not when your songs are as good as this…
