A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management.

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are travelling any distance.

A guide for Artists and Promoters

The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to musicianlive2 at gmail.com once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

The Mick Pini Band
£10.00
plus Strange Blues
Doors 8:00pm
With a life-time in music, you will hear echoes and influences from the whole tradition of the blues in his playing. His uncompromising adherence to a genuine belief in his music has never been deflected. His distinctive raw, attacking riffs and phrases are reminiscent of such legendary names as Freddie King, Albert Collins or T-Bone Walker.

Mick Pini started playing guitar as a young boy back in 1960. Since then he’s paid his dues in pubs, clubs, festivals, concert halls - even busking on the streets. Over a lifetime he’s worked with all sorts: BB King, Doctor Ross, Professor Longhair, Rich Grech, Mojo Buford, Louisana Red, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Chris Farlowe, Mike Vernon and Luther Allison. Pini has more recently worked with Roy Estrada and Jimmy Carl Black.

Eric Clapton called him the “legitimate successor to Peter Green”, while Mick Vernon described him as “having the energy and attack that made Freddie King one of the greats. There are too few great guitarists working the European scene. Sure there are many good ones, but only a few have the potential to make a mark in a way Peter Green did many years ago”.

A veteran on the blues circuit, Mick now lives in Germany but is very much the real deal and a fascinating character as well as one hell of a guitar player.

As Peter Green is said to have said, ‘it’s is the notes that he doesn’t play that makes him’.

Playing live - Mick will be playing with Strange Blues as his band in England for this tour . They have steadily earned a reputation as a blistering live act, gigging steadily around the East Midlands and supporting and playing with the likes of Sally Barker and Aynsley Lister.

The Zeppelins

The Zeppelins capture the sound, energy and look of Led Zeppelin at the height of their fame. We love Led Zeppelin’s music, it’s as simple as that. The Zeppelins are four musicians with decades of experience across tribute and original bands. We finally found the right combination to play Led Zeppelin’s music and play it right from the soaring high range of a young Robert Plant, those unmistakeable and timeless Page riffs, JPJ’s solid but creative basslines and of course, Bonzo’s thunderous beats.

Kris Drever celebrates his first decade as an acclaimed solo artist and songwriter with a new studio album, If Wishes Were Horses, and tour. The album is his first for six years (during which time his band Lau have established themselves as the most widely acclaimed and musically progressive trio in British folk music). Drever’s voice and guitar forms part of the backbone of today’s contemporary roots scene. Hugely admired as a solo artist, collaborator, and member of folk superstars Lau, he is a phenomenal and prolific artist.

As well as material from If Wishes Were Horses Kris will revist older songs from across his catalogue, playing many live for the first time. Fans can get involved by posting on his Facebook old songs they would like to hear and Kris will pick from those selections.

Doors 8:00pm
Hat Fitz is a “veteran” wild man of the blues scene in Australia. He has a record 18 straight appearances at Byron’s East Coast Blues and Roots Festival, a record that is not likely to ever be broken, and one which bears testimony to his amazing live performances and popularity with festival goers. Cara draws on her soul background (she’s toured Europe and the United States with singers such as Jamiroquai and Corinne Bailey-Rae), and although blessed with a sensational voice she was not content to be labelled as ‘just a singer’. She has taken to drumming duties as well as washboards, flute and tin whistle, sometimes all at once.

Their live shows are masterclasses in powerhouse playing and singing: raw, exciting, exhuberant and a whole load of fun.

"Simple, powerful, stellar" - Rolling Stone.

Supporting is Jack Blackman, a rising young acoustic blues star from Birmngham. Still only in his early twenties he has power and licks to spare allied to some very fine songs indeed.

HUBCAP

Special guests Howling Matt and Slim Jim
Hubcap are a Rock Blues Psychedelic two piece band. Dave moved to Northants 2 years ago after living in Bristol for 15 years gigging round the City in his former Band. The duo met whilst jamming at one of Kelmarsh's regular house partys and it was clear from the outset there was a musical connection. With Vampin electric Slide and Rockin Guitar Riffs, Dan's 'mitchel/bonham' influences and a pinch of rewiring due to their mis-spent youth, they're definitely not a duo to miss...............

The Pat McManus Band are a powerful three piece blues/rock trio, headed up by the former Mama's Boys and Celtus guitarist/violinist virtuoso and true gent Pat McManus (AKA The Professor).

Pat is today considered to be one of the last remaining individual guitar heroes from a generation of Irish guitarists, after the sad and early loss of both Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore. He formed Mama's Boys with his brothers John and Tommy in the eighties. The band, although very young, soon proved to be a great success in the world of rock ’n’ roll and were one of the greatest rock bands to come out of Northern Ireland. They are perhaps best known for their hits 'Needle in the Groove' and their cover of Slade’s ‘Mama Weer all Crazy Now’.

MARTIN STEPHENSON has been one of the UK’s best-loved musicians for over 30 years since fronting 80s band The Dainties.

Always popular on the circuit, Stephenson’s “must see” live performances are an exuberant tour-de-force combining heart-in-your-mouth intimacy with playful humour and warm self-deprecation.

The Daintees’ critically acclaimed 1986 debut BOAT TO BOLIVIA opened up an always interesting story. It showcased Stephenson’s songwriting, poetic romanticism and spiritual depth – so marking him out as a soulful cream of the leftfield crop during the self-obsessed 1980s.

Never pandering to a particular scene, Stephenson’s lightness of touch on a varied mix of musical styles was immediately apparent. His path was destined to be a lifelong journey through the music he loved: folk, ragtime, jazz, rockabilly, show tunes, punk-pop and country.

La Villa Strangiato (Rush tribute)
£10.00adv £12.00door
La Villa Strangiato is an italian project, started in 2010 by Gabriele Ferrari and Carlo Fattorini, two roman musicians who had already worked together in the project "Yessongs Italy", with which they gained international praise. The purpose of La Villa Strangiato is to revive Rush's production of the '70s and first '80s, the period of their maximum popularity.

The band formed in 2010 and, thanks to the contribution of several friends and musicians, finally presented their first show (entirely dedicated to the album "Exit Stage Left") in Rome in March 2011. From then on, they started playing in several clubs across Europe with good results; but it's with the contribution of musician Claudio Sinisi (guitar) that they finally achieved the perfect combination of sound and technique.

The band present classics such as In The Mood and Working Man, as well as obscure tracks which very rarely get aired by Rush themselves plus favourites such as Xanadu, 2112, The Spirit Of Radio and many more.

Doors 7:00pm
Every now and then an artist comes along whose music reaches out and touches the soul of all who hear them…virtuoso guitarist, singer and composer Vicki Genfan is among those artists… Drawing from folk, jazz, pop, soul and world music, Vicki is redefining ‘singer/songwriter culture.’ With a mastery of the acoustic guitar that borders on pure alchemy, audiences are mesmerized by the waves of sound Vicki creates with just two hands and her voice. Using 29 alternate tunings and the percussive technique she calls ‘slap-tap’, you’ll find the addition of her pure, expressive vocals that dig deep and stir the heart to be the perfect accompaniment on many of her songs. Vicki writes and beautifully sings her own brand of music and lyrics while putting her unmistakable imprint on familiar tunes like the Beatles’ Norweigian Wood. An evening with Vicki is far more than a concert; stories, warmth and humor come gift wrapped in an unforgettable evening of music that leaves the audience always wanting more.

Sally Barker is a singer's singer and a songwriter's songwriter. You will remember the very first time you heard her sing for her voice is like no other. She has the ability to lift the words off the page and can move people to tears armed with that 'bucket-full of soul' voice.

As a singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer Sally has had a long and varied career in music. Labelled a folk artist for much of her successful career, Sally's appeal stretches across many more musical genres. A much respected solo artist with half a dozen solo albums to her name, Sally is also celebrated for her live and studio work fronting all-female folk supergroup The Poozies." adapted from a short biog by Simon Redley
