A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management.

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are travelling any distance.

A guide for Artists and Promoters

The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to musicianlive2 at gmail.com once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

With a new album out My Name In The Brackets (The best of Boo Hewerdine & The Bible) it's a delight to welcome Boo back to Leicester. Writer of such masterpieces as Patience of Angels (Eddi Reader) and Harvest Gypsies (Kris Drever) as well as songs for the likes of k.d. lang, Chris Difford, Jerry Douglas and Mary Chapin Carpenter. He's been producing great music for thirty years and on this visit we'll get to hear songs from all across that period. Wry, funny, a greatly underrated guitar player, his live shows are an absolute joy and not to be missed.

Support comes from Sussex's Wildwood Jack, aka Adam Piggott and Jayne Freeman, purveyors of "quality songwriting, engaging, uplifting and filled with memorable melodies" (R2).

Untamed acoustic guitar, cutting lyrics, a powerful, evocative voice and honest songs, delivered with passion, but twisted to a unique sound. “First impressions? One Australian guy with an acoustic guitar and his mate with a homemade drum kit. What would you think? Me too. I then listened to this live album and Derrin, guitar, sidekick and drums proceeded to blow me away.” – David Blue, Net Rhythms.

Cregan & Co
£13.00adv £15.00door
Cregan & Co are a hugely entertaining and talented band fronted by Rod Stewart’s guitarist, fellow songwriter, producer, musical director Jim Cregan. It’s an evening of great music from the Rod Stewart songbook as well as a few other hits that Jim has written over the years with other rock stars. The show features the excellent Ben Mills on vocals and guitar who firmly puts his own stamp on some of Rod's hits alongside the man who helped write them. Jim was also guitarist with Leicester band Family as well as Cockney Rebel (with whom he’s touring in November 2015).

As Rod Stewart commented “If you can’t afford my tickets go see these guys - they’re just as good and half the price!!” More than anything this band are great fun, they create a party atmosphere at all their gigs and it’s hard not to sing along to all the hits and dance to some of the music that has formed the soundtrack of our lives.

The Poozies began their auspicious odyssey twenty-one years ago, when folk music wore elaborately patterned woolly jumpers and was only seen in dingy back rooms and very late at night on BBC2 - yet from the word “go” they were breaking out and happily exploring the musical universe. Pioneers of unusual and exciting arrangements, not only from the rich vein of traditional Gaelic culture but from any enticing genre, they take their audiences on a sparkling, spine-tingling journey through a sometimes fantastical landscape.

After impressing us when supporting Snowapple last year we had to bring him back for a headline show.

Former mime-artist and street sweeper Louis Barabbas is particularly interested in love stories – but the ones that take place after all those Happily-Evers have gathered a few layers of dust; narratives that explore the darker side of romance in an environment where regrets and insecurities start to take shape and are allowed (even encouraged) to blossom and gather thorns.

Louis is a writer/musician, dubious pundit, member of advisory board for Un-Convention, BrighterSound mentor, spoons player, Beards Calendar Miss June, co-founder of Debt Records and Captain of Dirt-Swing band The Bedlam Six.

The Wedding Present was born in Leeds, in the UK, in 1985 with the release of the debut single GO OUT AND GET EM’ BOY! and the band’s first album, GEORGE BEST, followed a couple of years later. With the early releases on their own label, the band acquired a reputation for bittersweet, breathtakingly honest love songs immersed in whirlwind guitars, so it was quite extraordinary that they decided to explore traditional Eastern European folk music for their major label debut on RCA Records in 1989 with UKRAINSKI VISTUPI V JOHNA PEELA. However, this was soon to be followed by the more traditionally incendiary BIZARRO, which featured their first hit single KENNEDY.

Swedish road dogs Bonafide are back at the Musician for the first time in 4 years! They are, to put it simply, a young band playing old hard rock but that doesn't do them justice. Here are four excellent musicians who, apart from instrumental skills, have a talent for writing great songs. Their music is often compared to AC/DC, but it certainly isn't any imitation.

Bonafide were formed by versatile singer and guitarist Pontus Snibb (also drummer with Jason & the Scorchers) in Malmö in the south of Sweden in 2006, and released the eponymous debut album the following year. This was followed by festivals and other major gigs, opening for bands such as Deep Purple, Europe, Status Quo, Y&T and the Quireboys. The band have kept touring hard and releasing quality albums ever since, and have played over 150 gigs and festivals across Europe since 2013.

Their live shows are great fun too, witht he gaps between their great songs filled with good humour and tall tales.

Leicester's own Steve Cartwright is a charismatic performer who has been writing great songs (and poetry) for years. Many years indeed, for in Steve's own words, he has "been around for centuries". His writing spans the personal, the political and the mystical, and covers much more besides.

Steve's project The Last Days bears all of these hallmarks and features Kevin Barnett on cahon, bass and harmonies. Join us for an afternoon of Cartwright classics to delight and inspire.

Grace and The Magic Roots are a dub-folk duo based in leicester and have been spreading positive vibes since 2010! Available for festivals, garden parties, faery balls, forest dwellings, folk-clubs, fire gatherings

A folk band marooned in the city, GMR incorporate a world of electronics - with pitch-shifters, loops, drones, and dub-sirens - alongside acoustic instruments such as recorder and tribal kick-drum.

Doors 8:00pm
Exciting, up-coming Leicester multi-genre three-piece, Kafkadiva, released their new album ‘Dysfunctionormal’ in September 2018 and have chosen The Musician as the perfect venue to perform the album live for the first time!

This experienced trio of local musicians, namely Louise Wilson (guitars, lead vocals), Steve Chilton (bass) and Tony Norris (drums), have already made a name for themselves since coming together in 2016, organically growing a loyal fan-following who are drawn to their relatable - and often wry - lyrics, and diverse musical sound and style.

‘Dysfunctionormal’ is the second album from Kafkadiva and follows the well-received debut release, ‘Big Toes and Fingers’. The new all original twelve-track LP features the deliciously bluesy, riff-based title track, along with the radio-friendly and melodic ballad, ‘How Long’, and the deeply emotive ‘Catch Me’. As is the case with the album, Kafkadiva’s live set will ensure a journey through many different genres whilst remaining recognisably Kafkadiva.

As Louise would say, “Our sound is always led by wherever the song takes us. Why be ‘samey’ when you can be different?”

Come along and find out for yourselves!
