A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management.

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are travelling any distance.

A guide for Artists and Promoters

The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to musicianlive2 at gmail.com once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

New music from the ever-brilliant Mike Watt, he of Minutemen, fIREHOSE, The Stooges, Dos, Hand to Man Band and more is always a cause for celebration. This time it’s coming out under the banner “CUZ”, a collaboration with Sam Dook, he of The Go! Team.

CUZ’s album, ‘Tamatebako’ is billed as “a conversation taking place over nearly eight years and several continents.” It’s due to be released on Bleeding Hearts Recording on May 12th . So far all we have to judge it by is this one video and early indications are that it’s a wee departure from most of Mike’s previous output, having, as it does, a seriously fun, bouncing almost pop rhythm to it; albeit one that’s founded on Watts inimitable bass playing. One would struggle to imagine Stooges playing this, certainly, although with the direction Minutemen were moving in just prior to D Boons untimely demise one could quite possibly almost imagine them having ended up as a band not a million miles away from Cuz. “Project Mersh” finally reaching its logical conclusion? John Butler
From Diesel Park West
£6.00adv £7.00door
Tonight's show features a solo performance from the lead singer and lyricist of Diesel Park West. The Diesel's 1989 release 'Shakespeare Alabama' was a record denied it's due place in the upper echelons of rock 'n' roll but gave an early indication that here was someone able to craft songs of such quality, comparable to the likes of Ray Davies, Marriott/Lane, Townshend and perhaps even Young and Zimmerman.

With the songs and that voice, John's solo acoustic gigs demonstrate all the inherent musical qualities of the songs he wrote, delivered with an engaging wit and insight only someone with intimate knowledge of the real music business could possibly know. Performances wrapped up in a humorous and insightful delivery, not afraid to enter the dark zone whilst offering consummate skill in doing so. A John Butler night is well worth checking out!

Houndstooth
£7.00adv £9.00door
plus Mountaintop Junkshop and The Kirkland Turn
Houndstooth writes electric folk songs that talk about everyday sweetness and desolation in a manner that’s as singular and idiosyncratic as singer Katie Bernstein’s inimitable voice. If their songs were pictures, they’d be William Eggleston photographs - overheard stories in heated-up kodachrome speaking of sweetness and tragedy.

Their debut LP, “Ride Out The Dark,” is a collection of songs that speak to the light at the end of that dark forest tunnel we all find ourselves stuck in now and again. Put it on your turntable and sit with it like a friend; it’s the kind of record that makes you homesick for an un-nameable place and puts you in its own kind of darkness on the edge of town where things are raw and alive and unchained. Their follow-up LP, "No News From Home" came out in March of 2015.

Betty & The Boy
£7.00adv £9.00door
plus support
Commentators who like to keep things neatly slotted into place have struggled with Betty and The Boy, precisely because they defy simple categorization. Though the quintet’s string-laden melodies occasionally anchor them in the territories of folk, bluegrass, or minimalist rock, they’re more at home in the cracks in-between.

It’s from these quirky, deeper, sometimes darker places that Betty Jaeger’s voice reaches up, takes you by the hand, and sweeps you along on an entrancing musical journey.

Hailing from Kalispell, Montana, her lyrics play with imagery from nature and are almost fairy tale in style with ever so delicate presentation.

The band has built a dedicated fan base as well as winning much admiration amongst prominent peers, including one of the leading figures in modern-day bluegrass – Woody Platt. The lead singer with top band The Steep Canyon Rangers has this to say:

“Her voice and the texture of her voice, along with the instrumentation, which is almost semi-classical in places, is so striking. Difficult to describe, this is a unique ensemble playing good music – it’s pretty spectacular!”

Si Cranstoun
£14.00adv £16.00door
Si Cranstoun has been honing his vocal talent for many years. Performing with his big band across the UK as one of the foremost names on the underground vintage scene, headlining the likes of the Twinwood right through to the Rivolli Rooms and starting to cross into the mainstream market at Secret Garden .

In 2013 he was invited to perform with Little Richard in Las Vegas and came to the attention of Warner Music Entertainment subsequently being signed by A’n’R President Conrad Whitey who was captivated pure and simply by Si’s voice and his ability to create songs that have you waking up in the middle of the night humming them out loud.

2014 has seen Si developing even further his writing skills and working with writers and producers ranging from Ivor Novello award winners to those responsible for helping the likes of Cara Emerald and Keane achieve worldwide success. Together they have created a series of unbelievably catchy songs which really emphasise Si Cranstoun’s foot tapping expertise as well as most importantly a voice that literally stops you in your tracks… unsurprising when you recall that Si’s formative years were spent performing on the streets to the general public with his brother .

Si’s distinctive northern soul voice has seen him compared with legends such as Sam Cooke winning a huge number of fans on his recent tour of the UK as support to the Overtones, with large queues lining up to get signed albums and getting comments from hardened venue merchandisers saying they had never seen anything like it. This tour was the testing ground for tracks from the new album and if crowd reaction is anything to go by , then the album will be a winner.

After a successful co-headline tour of the UK and Ireland in April and upon returning from her third tour in the US, performing on the main stage at some of the biggest country music festivals, Sasha McVeigh is heading back out on the road on “home-turf” for her ‘I Stand Alone Tour’ to promote her critically-acclaimed debut album. Joined by Nashville-based trio, The Cains, this tour is sure to be high-energy with an exciting blend of the British and American music spectrum.

Sasha's ‘I Stand Alone’ was released on June 8th which was met with five-star reviews from the press and the single, ‘Someone To Break My Heart’, was included in The Independent newspapers ‘The Playlist’, alongside Ed Sheeran, and was described as “brilliantly inspiring”.

Shortly after learning how to talk, the Cain siblings were harmonising with each other. The two sisters and brother from Alabama have shared a lot over the years, but their passion for music is what has brought them together as The Cains, a country band with unique harmonies and a variety of influences. Their sound can be described as The Civil Wars meets Fleetwood Mac.

Positively Fourth Street
Songs from the Village
£6.00adv £8.00door
Some of the world's finest, most provocative, most lyrical and poetic music came out of the melting pot that was Greenwich Village, New York in the 1960s. Artists such as Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez cut their teeth in the folk clubs and bars during that time.

Positively Fourth Street is a multimedia show that celebrates all of these artists and many more. With footage from the time, stories around the songs, as well as the songs themselves, this is a trip back to a time when music was in the cafes, and revolution was in the air.

Ben Bowden is a seasoned performer who has played all over Europe in various bands and groups. He currently plays Paul Simon in the touring show, The Sounds of Simon. He has a deep interest in music from the early 60s, especially Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and Phil Ochs.

Hey Colussus
£6.00adv £8.00door
plus Colossloth
Hey Colossus are a band with punk ethics that make alternative, heavy rock oblivious to stylistic fashions in music, and with great consistency. ‘In Black & Gold’ is the London-based six-piece’s eighth album in a superb 11-year run and fittingly - as their first for Rocket Recordings, home of Goat – it finds them hitting a stripped-back psychedelic groove. Opener ‘Hold On’ is loose, hazy, and full of foreboding and single ‘Hey, Dead Eyes, Up!’ finds them in more typical Melvins-like sludge territory. On ‘Lagos Atom’ they experiment with dub within a post-rock setting and they end with ‘Sinking, Feeling’, a slab of heavy, half-time doom. A more diverse and calculated album than a usual Hey Colossus offering, and all the better for it.

Rozi Plain
£7.00adv
“BRILLIANT... A BIG FAVOURITE OF THE SHOW” – LAUREN LAVERNE, BBC 6 MUSIC

“GRACEFUL AND BEGUILING” ???? – THE SKINNY

Rozi Plain has been making music since her brother gave her a guitar when she was 16. Raised in Winchester, she spent a few years studying art and painting boats in Bristol, where she met long-term collaborators Kate Stables and Rachael Dadd, and where she made her first two albums. She has recently moved to London, and is set to release her third LP, Friend, in 2015.

Rozi's most recent offering, Joined Sometimes Unjoined, is made up of ten tracks of intoxicatingly sad and beautiful pop. Her songs are full of heartwrenching harmonies and they are dotted with unexpected instrumental flourishes that crash about and bring them to life. In 'Eating In Your House', the vocals climb out of a backdrop of muted guitars, handclaps and the occasional yelp. They rise out with melodies that draw you in. The sparseness of the half-mumbled lyrics means that there is always something hidden, like the discarded scraps of a torn up poem. The excruciatingly beautiful 'Take It' is somehow simultaneously brimming with sadness and optimism.

Her new single, 'Jogalong' feels like chasing birds barefoot in a dewy field, and in a stroke of onomatopoeic song-naming genius, could also be the soundtrack to Follow That Bus.

Rozi’s taken her joyous live show on the road around the Europe, the UK and the USA, and toured with an assortment of folk-mongers, from luminary, Devendra Banhart, to Lost Map’s very own starlet, The Pictish Trail.
