A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management.

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are travelling any distance.

A guide for Artists and Promoters

The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to musicianlive2 at gmail.com once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

Leicester's own Steve Cartwright is a charismatic performer who has been writing great songs (and poetry) for years. Many years indeed, for in Steve's own words, he has "been around for centuries". His writing spans the personal, the political and the mystical, and covers much more besides.

Steve's project The Last Days bears all of these hallmarks and features Kevin Barnett on cahon, bass and harmonies. Join us for an afternoon of Cartwright classics to delight and inspire.

Grace and The Magic Roots are a dub-folk duo based in leicester and have been spreading positive vibes since 2010! Available for festivals, garden parties, faery balls, forest dwellings, folk-clubs, fire gatherings

A folk band marooned in the city, GMR incorporate a world of electronics - with pitch-shifters, loops, drones, and dub-sirens - alongside acoustic instruments such as recorder and tribal kick-drum.

Doors 8:00pm
It was only a matter of time. A late night bar conversation between Sam Carter and Jim Moray (both BBC Folk Award winners in their own right) concluded in the forming of a gleefully raucous guitar band that plays traditional songs and tunes. Folk songs you can jump to!

False Lights are a folk rock group, formed in the spirit of the genre’s late-‘60s originators but informed by the music of Sam and Jim’s far more recent youth. This is a turn-it-up-to-eleven-and-throw-yourself-about-your-dad’s-garage kind of group. “Quite brilliant, I think“ - Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2

The Light of Day Foundation was formed in 1999 by a group of musicians from the renowned New Jersey shore, to raise money for research into the cause of Parkinson’s and related diseases. Legendary New Jersey music manager, Bob Benjamin, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the age of just 38 years. The organisation was named ‘Light of Day’ after the Bruce Springsteen song – in the hope that a cure would be ‘just around the corner’.

Over the years Light of Day has grown from a one-day event into a festival spanning 10 days in the New Jersey/New York metropolitan area. More significantly, Light of Day has expanded into an internationally recognized tour, through a true grassroots effort of musicians, music fans and benefactors. Light of Day shows take place around the world on 3 continents, including six shows in Canada, an 18 day late November into December trek through Europe, with stops in England, Wales, Ireland, Sweden, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, plus a brand new Light of Day event in Australia! Portions of the proceeds from each show are donated to a local Parkinson's organization.

John Bramwell (I Am Kloot)
£16.00adv
John Harold Arnold Bramwell is an English singer-songwriter. He is the frontman for the three-piece alternative rock band I Am Kloot, and has previously issued solo material under the guise of "Johnny Dangerously".

A solo John Bramwell gig is more than just a musical experience, it’s pure comedy gold rolled in as well. Before we even start the set he’s regaled us with stories of the nearby Heptonstall Beer Festival, with a tag line of “three days, two pubs and one festival”, where he played a solo set on a hot summer’s day last year and was heckled by morris dancers. It sets the scene for an evening that’s full of funny stories, rants about the music business and the commercialization of Glastonbury, absurd banter with hecklers about the setlist, including a request for a song that already been played, and his hair amongst other things, mishaps and ultimately over two hours of some of the finest songs of a generation.

The last two I Am Kloot albums and supporting tours have been supplemented musically by strings, brass, keyboards and other additional musicians, but John performing the songs solo strips them right back to their core. His rough edged voice is perfect for tales of drinking and disaster, love and loss, all with that dark foreboding feeling running through them. Whilst he’s not what you would describe as a classic singer, his vocals are a perfect fit for the stories because it makes you feel like he’s lived through every word of them and in the absence of the adornments of the band format, it casts them into stark reality.

A world-class musician, Simon ‘Honeyboy’ Hickling is a blues harmonica ace with a hard earned and well-deserved international reputation.

His subtle and fabulously expressive playing is grounded firmly in the ‘50s and ‘60s heyday of the Chicago and Gulf Coast styles of playing.

With a tremendously experienced band backing him, Simon never fails to deliver anything less than a first-rate evenings entertainment and never lets good taste and soulfulness stifle a rockin’ night out.

Diesel Park West

Doors 8:00pm
Diesel Park West are for many people the most enigmatic band from the late eighties still performing today. Back in those Thatcherite days the psychedelic guitar ground they occupied was often dismissed as a mere throwback to the mid-sixties with only an enlightened minority realising its real musical significance. The beating heart of rock ‘n’ roll is now far more aware of the Diesels' sound and maybe that’s why any live performance by the band is considered an event worth seeing. Drawing upon eight albums worth of material and the hippest cover versions imaginable, Diesel Park West continue to prove beyond a doubt that they really are the torchbearers for an entire genre.

Doors 8:00pm
You can't talk about Wreckless Eric without mentioning his enduring hit Whole Wide World-covered in stadiums and sheds from Aberdeen to Alabama -but there's more to him than just that. With over 40 years of recording and touring behind him he shuns the dictates of nostalgia and doesn’t do comebacks for the simple reason that he never went away. His 2015 album ‘amERICa’was an urgent reminder of what he’s about, and new album Construction Time & Demolitionis a musically complex trawl through the psyche of a man with plenty to say and nothing to lose. It's always been that way: loud, dissonant, lyrical and gently melodic -cogent music for desperate times.

Worry Dolls
£10.00adv £12.00door
plus Emma Ballantine & John Parker
Doors 8:00pm
London’s Worry Dolls have been rapidly building momentum with their unique approach to indie-folk. Formed in late 2010, the duo met at Paul McCartney’s school of music in Liverpool. Bonding initially due to having the same fiery red locks, what sets Worry Dolls apart is their tongue-in-cheek, honest lyrics and their refusal to sing “cliché love songs”.

Worry Dolls’ music is packed full of sublime harmonies, atop a plethora of varied instruments. Many will have seen them performing at Glastonbury Festival, supporting Joan Armatrading on tour, or heard their music played on Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music.

Since their first EP, Worry Dolls’ sound has grown as their influences have shifted more towards the rootsier sounds of Nashville & the Appalachian mountains – still with a strong UK stamp. In their time together as a duo, they’ve forged something substantially stronger than a hair colour match. A beautiful and captivating result.

“The brilliantly quirky duo Worry Dolls – a super-shiny beacon of joy in a dreamland far, far away from the persistently ‘regular’ sound of folk that’s flooding the charts right now” - The Huffington Post

“It’s no secret that we think Worry Dolls are pretty special” - For Folk’s Sake

“Worry Dolls combine a great sensibility of American Country music with their own English folk influences to create a warm and infectious sound” - Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2
