A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management.

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are travelling any distance.

A guide for Artists and Promoters

The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to musicianlive2 at gmail.com once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

In a career spanning almost two decades, Oh Susanna has released eight critically acclaimed records noted for their contemplative, thoughtful, folk-inspired songs that transport listeners into an imaginary emotional landscape. Whether applauding a young woman’s need to stand tall in the face of dire circumstances, expressing love and tenderness to a dying loved one or embodying the anger of a soldier’s widow, Oh Susanna’s songs aim straight for the gut. The timeless themes of love, loss and longing are expressed in soaring melodies and vivid lyrics.

Slim Chance
£12.00adv £15.00door
When Ronnie Lane embarked on the last stage of his career - which had already included the Small Faces and The Faces - he wrote some of his strongest songs and recorded several remarkable albums with his own band, Slim Chance.

Slim Chance is still very much in action, and boasts a great line-up consisting of three original members, Steve Bingham, Charlie Hart and Steve Simpson, joined by three top class musicians: Brendan O’Neill on drums, Billy Nicholls (ex Who) acoustic guitar and vocals, and Bob Dylan’s favourite, the renowned Geraint Watkins on keys and vocals.

40 years on from when Ronnie was at the height of his creative powers, the band is enjoying playing together in the spirit that Ronnie championed so magnificently. As well as fine versions of songs such as ‘How Come’, ‘The Poacher’, ‘Ooh la la’ and ‘Debris’, the band is now performing songs from its latest album, ‘New Cross Road’, which is now available on the band’s own label, Fishpool Records.

All in all the band delivers a barnstorming show that ‘digs deep into the roots of rock ‘n’ roll’’, appeals to all ages, and has aptly been described as ‘balm for the soul and music from the heart’! Catch it while you can!

Karibow

feat: This Winter Machine
Doors 7:30pm - 11:30pm
Tonight's billing of German band Karibow and one of the UK's finest acts This Winter Machine promises to be a wonderful evening of prog.
Oliver Rüsing first formed KariBow as a six-piece band somewhere near the end of 1996, but as other obligations pressed upon the lives of each member the band dissolved. Oliver himself went on to be an art professor and word is that he was also a drum teacher. But Oliver has a gift for writing songs and composing and playing music. KariBow became a personal project for which, if I have this correctly, he wrote, composed, played all instruments (guitars, keyboards, bass, and drums), recorded, and produced all on his own. A steady succession of albums followed over the years, released in small numbers and not for a broader market beyond friends and a small interested fan base.

That began to change in 2011 with the release of "Man of Rust". His very wise and perceptive wife told him to stop making albums for the shelves and to get his music out there. Oliver submitted the album to the German Rock & Pop Musicians' Association (DRMV) and it was chosen for the award of best arrangement. Three years later, he released "Addicted" and it too won the same award, this time for best progressive band. That led to Oliver's most ambitious project yet, the phenomenal "Holophinium", a full album of progressive melodic rock with a band and a cast of stellar guests including Sean Timmins, Colin Tench, and Michael Saddler of Saga. A second disc featuring the multipart 37-minute track "Letters from the White Room" was part of the package. KariBow toured with Saga and have since played some festivals in Germany as well. With KariBow's fan base suddenly growing, an interest developed in earlier albums (at the time of the release of "Holophinium", only "Addicted" was also available on CD and "Man of Rust" was a download only). Oliver, fresh of the tour with Saga, took a brief holiday and then jumped back into the studio. The result is a re-release of "Man of Rust", remixed and remastered, with three extra studio tracks not included on the original version. New album Monumento features many guests in the prog world and has many fantastic reviews.
This Winter Machine formed in mid 2016 after a series of ads led to jams that quickly turned into writing sessions.
Members have shared a stage with artists as diverse as Marillion and Uriah Heep, Tim 'Ripper' Owens, Magnum and Uli Jon Roth.
The debut album 'The Man Who Never Was' was released in Jan 2017 to widespread critical acclaim and a great response from the public.
They were nominated in the Best Newcomers category at the Classic Rock Society annual awards, which they won in 2018 and have also been included in many 'Names To Watch' lists for 2017/18. Their second album A Tower Of Clocks is selling in great numbers and is always riding high in the prog charts.

Doors 8:00pm - 11:30pm
Brilliant double headline gig, plus local favourites.

Collateral

Ripped jeans, cowboy boots, long hair and make-up, Collateral are a band that look and sound like a stadium rock band. When the band started out, they were known as the Angelo Tristan Band, with frontman Angelo and bass player Jack forming the nucleus of the band. Since then, almost 5 years ago, they have worked tirelessly to grow the act, the fanbase and the bands profile.
In true rock and roll style, the ride hasn't been easy for this four-piece, but their sheer grit and determination have seen them overcome obstacles and go from strength to strength. The past few years have been no exception, but, with the recent addition of new members Todd Winger (guitar) and Ben Atkinson (drums) and the release in May 2018 of their debut single 'Midnight Queen', this band have really stepped up their game and are now starting to attract the attention they deserve.

Piston

A BRITISH FIVE PIECE ROCK N’ ROLL ENGINE.
Piston have toured and played shows with The Temperance Movement, Sebastian Bach, Whitesnake/Def Leppard (Acoustic), The Quireboys, Toseland, The Treatment, Reckless Love, Wolfsbane, The Picturebooks, Tim Ripper Owens, The Union, Love/Hate and Voodoo Six.

Gallows High

An Evening with David Wyatt & Band

It is difficult to categorise David and his music, so think somewhere between Jeff Buckley-esque soaring, beautiful, intimately crafted songs, happy feel-good numbers harping back to the jazz era of the 1920s and pounding epics that will stick in your head forever.

His shows are always unique, especially when it comes to audience-band banter, but you are also served a visual treat, with a likeness somewhere between a Victorian gentleman and Captain Jack Sparrow.

It’s always wise when going to a David Wyatt gig to expect the unexpected, the only constant is high-quality entertainment and a memorable evening.

The John Martyn Project

The John Martyn Project

This is a special project where four artists come together to celebrate the music of John Martyn. Each brings their own story and connection to John’s music which adds to the fabric of the overall experience of the project.

In the wake of a special sold out show at the Jazz café in London to celebrate the music of John Martyn, “I cant bare the thought of not experiencing that again” said Sam Brookes singer songwriter, everyone in the 6 piece band agreed and so the John Martyn project was born.

Blythe Pepino
Pepino’s roots as a leftfield genre-bending songwriter, Mesadorm draws influence from contemporary electronic passions like Caribou, Grizzly Bear and Sylvan Esso, as well as from great female songwriters Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush. Their writing sits somewhere between the domestic observation of Suzanne Vega and the powerful, elemental other-worldliness of Bjork.

Kit Hawes
Kit has fond himself working alongside artists including Seth Lakeman, Afro Celt Sound system, Yola Carter, Mad Dog Mcrea, Sheelanagig and Roni Size to name a few but what unites them is a passion for folk music.

Pete Josef
Pete Josef has always been a soul boy at heart, but his Multi-instrumental skill’s have led him into some interesting situations. He has for years been recording and playing live with with D&B legend Roni Size and Reprazent, and fronts and co-produces the lo-fi house duo White Lamp with Darren Emerson (underworld). He spent the summer season of 2014 on tour as bass player and guitarist in Kelis’ live band, gracing the stages of UK’s Glastonbury festival and Jools Holland, Splendour in the Grass in Oz, and Fuji Rock in Japan. Whilst in this time also working on his debut album, Pete has been busy collaborating on some exciting dance productions. He co-writes and sings on Alex Barcks summer sizzler, Spinning Around, Sascha Braemers club smash For You, and more recently on Comixxx’ deep masterpiece, Broken Connection. The dance features keep coming in, and inform a sprinkling of electronic sounds in his originals. As album two is already bubbling in his mind, his focus now will be his new live trio, which fuses all his soul, world, dance and jazz influences into an exciting mix for stage.

Sam Brookes
In 2011 his eponymous debut Album saw him named as Sunday Times ‘Breaking Act’ and his independently released follow up Kairos was picked as one of the best albums of 2014 by The Independent. Considerable streaming success and support slots for the likes of Willy mason, Scott Matthews and Joan Armatrading have earned Sam a dedicated following and growing anticipation for his third album.

“With his keening tenor vibrato sailing effortlessly into the upper register, there’s something of Tim Buckley about Sam Brookes” - Andy Gill - The Independent

John Blakeley & Jon Short
A rhythm section that have played alongside each other over the years in variations incarnations such as Sheelanagig, Yola Carter and No Go Stop.

Sally Barker with Keith Richard Buck

Sally is re-united for this first show of the year by multi- nstrumentalist Keith Richard Buck.
Sally Barker's appearance as Sir Tom Jones' finalist in the Voice UK 2014 belies a long career in music - one that wasn't spent singing pop covers for a light entertainment audience but fashioned in the folk clubs of the British Isles. In a career spanning the best
part of 40 years, English singer/songwriter Sally has released a string of solo albums and been a part of dozens more, notably with fem-folksters The Poozies.
In her time Sally has supported (amongst many others) Bob Dylan, Robert Plant, Jools Holland and Sir Tom himself, worked with inspirational musicians such as averick double bass genius Danny Thompson, country folk-rock guitarist Jerry Donahue, the mercurial
accordionist Karen Tweed and legendary drummer Dave Mattocks. Sally is fresh from a Journey across the States with long-time collaborator Vicki Genfan, writing and recording 'in the wild' at some of America's most remote and windswept places.

Sally is still working on the follow up to her 2017 solo album 'Ghost Girl' and some of these songs are already in her live solo set !

“You have the most beautiful voice that has ever been on this show.” Sir Tom Jones on
The Voice UK

Keith, who cites Paul Kossoff and James Taylor as guitar-playing inspirations, was playing
hookie from school at 14 to tour with rock bands. In his 20s he mastered the pedal steel guitar, mandolin, piano and banjo to continue his musical education with country rock outfits.
Keith joined Sally's band in the 90s, playing on several highly acclaimed albums. Session work in early 2000s led to work with Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash with whom he
remained until 2008 when he accepted an offer to join Talon. Playing the songs of the Eagles, Keith is currently enjoying his 15 th year with the award winning tribute band.

Island born Robert J. Hunter combines his gruff and powerful voice with the wild thud of overdriven blues guitar.
His powerful debut album, ’Songs for the Weary’, received blues chart success and critical acclaim and the single release, ‘Demons’, reached number one in the UK iTunes Blues Chart.
‘Before the Dawn’ followed late 2015 showing that Robert had matured and developed as a singer, songwriter and instrumentalist. Robert then released a solo acoustic album, ‘Where I’m From’ on independent label, Spiritual Records.

Robert’s new album and fourth studio release, ‘The Robert J Hunter Band’ was released February 2018 and features the iTunes number one singles, ‘Wait Your Turn’ and ‘Suzy’. This self-titled LP captures The Robert J Hunter Band in their most organic and raw form. Recorded live, this is an honest record, not hidden behind the makeup of over production. Listen here: http://smarturl.it/RJHB
In 2017 Robert was a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) with his powerful ballad, ‘Preacher’ which was chosen from 16,000 entries.

Following his set at The Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival, The Robert J Hunter Band were chosen as the fifth and final act to compete in the UK Blues Challenge at Liverpool‘s legendary, Cavern Club.

This is a road worn, dirty blues band that’s been honed to super tight perfection by sheer hard work and volume of shows.

I'm sure anyone who saw them support Lifesigns here or on last year's Hawkwind Tour will want to see a full set.

Award-winning British songwriters, composers and multi-instrumentalists Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington are The Blackheart Orchestra.
One of the must-see bands of 2019, the pioneering duo blend musical styles seamlessly sidestepping boundaries to create music huge enough to fill a cathedral. Well known for producing music beyond all easily marketed genres, their multi-instrumental sonic landscapes have always been too unpredictable for pop, too adventurous for the mainstream and too plain weird for folk.
Fusing acoustic fragility and electronica, The Blackheart Orchestra bring together stringed instruments with 80’s synthesisers and classical influences. Often mistaken for an 8-piece band on first listen, their stage has been described as a ‘musical spaceship’ or ‘laboratory’ where they are to be found continuously changing from electric and acoustic guitars, bowed guitar, piano, organ, bass and electronic percussion to vintage synthesisers, omnichord and melodica in a complex choreographed weave of musical moods and textures. One moment their sound is minimal and molecular, the next a mountain-like wall of sound with vast symphonic climaxes.
