A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management.

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are travelling any distance.

A guide for Artists and Promoters

The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to musicianlive2 at gmail.com once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

Blue Nation are a 3-piece band from Birmingham. They use riff-based melodic Blues rock from a reservoir of influences, including the Beatles, Cream, Zeppelin, Brit Pop 90’s and more recently Rival Sons and Vintage Trouble, to create their memorable sound. Their songs are delivered by three accomplished musicians, fronted with stunning vocals. All backed up with impressive gig experience, stage presence and great songs.

They play top venues in the major cities of the UK and further afield including two tours of NYC’s Greenwich Village and Manhattan. They are equally happy doing stripped down acoustic or full-blown electric gigs.
Their most prestigious performances have been on the main music stage at the F1 Silverstone British Grand Prix twice, and recent tours with Dirty Thrills, Steve Conte (NY Dolls), Skid Row, Brian Downey (Thin Lizzy), Von Hertzen Brothers, the Virginmarys, Cats In Space, King King, Daxx & Roxane and Kris Barras. They have also played main support to Toploader at Rhuddfest and the main stage slot at Evoke Festival, Brentwood. The quirkiest was The Tramlines Festival Sheffield, acoustic on a moving Tram.

The Black Feathers

Doors 8:00pm
The ability to write songs that are both modern and ancient is a rare thing. The product of an arcane art of weaving in traditional influences so thoroughly that they become the warp and weft of fresh creations.

The Black Feathers, made up of Ray Hughes and Sian Chandler, are two such talents. They first became aware of the magic between them while collaborating on several musical projects, becoming The Black Feathers and life partners in 2012.

“Once in a blue moon, the whole soars far above the sum of its parts. That’s what happens when The Black Feathers perform live”
- Black Mountain News, North Carolina

Americana, Folk, and Acoustic Indie Rock sensibilities coexist comfortably in their musical world, with Hughes’ guitar work buoying the kind of harmonies often only heard in family bands. Their music quickly draw the interest of listeners, but it is the stage chemistry that will keep them riveted.

Having already built up a loyal following in the UK, The Black Feathers have been spreading their wings across the US. They have performed at Philadelphia Folk Festival and AmericanaFest, and have also been awarded official showcases at the North East Regional and Far-West Folk Alliance conferences.

With a new single and a live album in the pipeline, these are exciting times for what FATEA refer to as "a duo of undeniable talent".

State of Quo

Doors 8:00pm
State of Quo is one of the longest established and most popular Status Quo Tribute Bands in Europe. Originally formed by Rhythm Guitarist and Vocalist Paul Carr in 1996, the band have played countless gigs across the UK as well as Europe.

In more recent years, the band has had the pleasure of appearing as support band to “Rhino’s Revenge” - a band fronted by Quo’s Bass player since 1986, John ‘Rhino’ Edwards – on a Tour to promote their second album release. It was during this series of gigs that Rhino described State of Quo as “the UK’s Premier Quo Tribute”

Other plaudits for the band have come from the likes of Jeff Rich, Quo’s drummer from 1986 to 2000, who played with State of Quo as special guest at the Rock the Lakes Music Festival in Preston in 2016. At the end of a very well received set, Jeff took to the mic to hail the band as “the nearest thing to Quo you’ll ever get – fantastic!” Mick Wall, legendary Rock Journalist and Author, described the band as “easily the best Quo Tribute act going” after introducing State of Quo at the first International Quo Fan Club Convention in 2015, where the band once again appeared alongside Rhino’s Revenge.

A typical State of Quo setlist highlights tracks from Quo’s classic 1970s albums as well as material from more recent albums such as ‘Heavy Traffic’ and ‘Quid Pro Quo’ – plus some of their many hit singles – all played as faithfully as possible to Quo’s own recordings and performances.

Vetiver
£15.00adv £18.00door
plus Alexia Avina
Doors 7:00pm
Andy Cabic’s musical being is, like many curious 21st century musicians, shaped and
sustained by divergent tangents. If he’s not crafting a melancholy folk rock diamond
in his Northern California studio, he’s moving a dance floor with bossa nova and house DJ sets, or helping curate a compilation of Japanese City Pop.

What’s magic about this new Vetiver LP Up On High
is the way these tangents color the ten songs without undermining a distinct move to more elemental, spacious and
natural arrangements. At the heart of each of these ten songs is Cabic’s voice: sweet,
tender and weathered — a welcome and soothing old friend if ever there was one.

There are other familiar friends: the album also features longtime engineer and collaborator Thom Monahan and the same resourceful and versatile band that helped Cabic make the more dense and layered Complete Strangers from 2015.

Up On High was written on acoustic guitar. Having moved twice since Complete Strangers, increasingly accustomed to a life in and out of boxes, it was the easiest
instrument to reach for in moments of onspiration. The basic tracking of the album
took place over a few Spring days at a friend’s house in the high desert of California.

This simple set -up captured the organic immediacy of a roomful
of friends playing
together on the floor. It’s alive and ever so subtly crackling with the intensity of a band working together, teasing out the melody and rhythms of songs with warmth and intimacy. Cabic and Monahan took the fruits of this session to Los Angeles and finished the album at Monahan’s studio over the summer as other friends popped by to lend their talents.

This album reflects the world that Cabic created and lives in: Jorge Ben phrasings peek out from behind Tom Petty's
Wildflowers outtakes, a gentle jangle lifts
whispers of REM’s
Murmur on a breeze up from Compass Point Studios. But Up On
High is most clearly Cabic and his band inhabiting the realm the band was born in —
sleek, economical, soulful, and sometimes sadness-tinged melodies riding on the gentle choogle and sway of an ensemble moving in beautiful unison. This is an album that breathes with you in real, lived in, natural time.

Alexia on Lost Map records.

“MESMERISING… A DISTINCT TALENT” – GOLDFLAKEPAINT

“MUSIC FOR THE SOUL — AND ALL PAST AND FUTURE FORMS IT TOOK AND WILL TAKE” – PASTE

“EXCEEDINGLY LUSH… YOU’LL FEEL AS IF YOU’RE SHARING A SECRET” – STEREOGUM

Alexia Avina is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist born and raised in Southeast Asia, previously based in Montreal and now living in rural Massachusetts, whose heavenly music is rooted in ambient, folk and dreampop traditions. Her new album Unearth will be released on CDR, cassette and digital platforms on October 9, 2020 jointly by Lost Map Records and, in North America, by Topshelf Records. It’s preceded by the single ‘Fit Into’, a track which captures much about what makes her so special – minimal, arrhythmic and tempo-based looping, ethereal melodic hooks, beauty, spaciousness and restraint. ‘Fit Into’ has received support from Paste, GoldFlakePaint and Clash among others.

Alexia Avina’s debut solo album Betting on an Island was released in February 2018 on Never Content, followed by her second album All That I Can’t See in March 2019. She also makes music as one half of ambient synth duo Best Fern. After recording Unearth at Breakglass Studios, Montreal together with a coterie of friends from the local music scene including Cedric Noel (bass), Nick Schofield (synth), Evan Tighe (drums, mastering), Justin Wright (cello) and Tim Gowdy (mixing, engineering), Alexia connected with Lost Map Records online, leading to her becoming the label’s first North American signing. Inspired by the visceral lyricism of Fiona Apple, the ambient electronica of Ai Aso, Sea Oleena and Hiroshi Yoshimura, the gauzy alt-folk of Lotte Kestner and the experimental sound collages of Kria Brekkan, Unearth is an utterly intoxicating listen – a kaleidoscopic swirl of textures and emotions, a record to get lost in again and again.

His music has been described as “masterful” by Fresh On The Net and “a sensitive breath of fresh folk air” by folk singer Sam Lee. ‘Islands’ (2020) was referred to as a ‘beautiful EP of compelling folk-indie with real gravitas’ by Americana UK who gave it 8/10. Forthcoming EP 'Hold On To The Light’ is set for release on July 1st 2022 and first single 'Best We Could' is out now.

Just a bit too earnest to be truly tongue-in-cheek, Jimmy Grayburn & the All Night Chemist’s music celebrates and mocks the mundane while stirring the soul. Anything from cheesy pop bangers about mobile phones, to moody trad folk exploring the modern-day fur industry, Jimmy’s music has storytelling at its heart. After performing with The Medlars and releasing their debut EP in 2017, Jimmy has gone solo, with a collection of stories spanning from family and friends, to love, nature, loneliness and life as a medic.

Seafoam Green even find room for a dash of Dublinese, just to remind people where they’re coming from. Heavy hitters like Rich Robinson, Derek Trucks, and Tyler Greenwell have all chipped in, and it’s not hard to hear why, for this is thrilling, vital, and – that word again - soulful music.?

One of the adopted sons of the Jersey Shore, Joe D’Urso’s musical career took off 1996 when he left his job at New York City’s legendary Premier Talent Agency to pursue a career as a singer-songwriter. His love of music began listening to the likes of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger and countless one-hit wonders from the 1950s to the 1970s, influences proudly woven into his songs. This has culminated in the release of 14 records, the most recent being 2018’s ‘Jersey Diner’.

After their 5-year tenure as the resident band at Liverpool’s iconic Cavern Club, Xander & the Peace Pirates went on to support the likes of Joe Bonamassa, Joe Satriani, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, the Temperance Movement, ex-Whitesnake’s Bernie Marsden and even Bon Jovi at Old Trafford Stadium to name but a few. This is most remarkable as, defying all expectations, lead singer and guitarist Keith Xander was born without a right arm below the elbow and plays his guitar using a prosthesis and hook with a pick attached at the end. Although many who have seen Keith play believe him to be an extraordinary guitarist, he is a virtuoso musician with a unique guitar technique and his playing rivals the best in the industry
.
This much was proven as 2016 saw the band release their debut album, titled ‘11:11’, on V2 Benelux Records, recorded at the world-famous Wisseloord studios in Hilversum, outside of Amsterdam. The album went on to receive critical acclaim from the likes of Classic Rock, Planet Rock Radio and from BBC Radio legend Bob Harris.

With haunting riffs, genius melodies and a uniquely infectious charisma, Xander And The Peace Pirates continue to share their musical passion to standing ovations, while spreading a universal message of peace, love and harmony. There is a whistle down the wind genius at play in the music that the band create especially with Keith Xander’s singular guitar styling that evokes the otherworldly musicianship of Hendrix and his ilk that must be heard and seen to be believed!

The man who once told us he loved us from the bottom of his pencil case, The Beautiful South’s Dave Hemingway is back and sounding better than ever. Together with erstwhile South colleague, guitarist/songwriter Phil Barton, new discovery singer/violinist Laura Wilcockson and top UK session & touring drummer Marc Parnell. Dave has created SUNBIRDS. Although born and bred in England the band’s sound predominantly features the instrumentation of traditional American roots music combined with the occasional burst of guitar heavy melody more associated with Seattle in the late 80s.

However, you can only sing about what you know.

“Although a lot of the songs have an Americana feel” says Dave, “they’re still about life in England. You’re going to feel a bit daft singing about pick-up trucks and low down honky-tonks when you live in Yorkshire.

Having previously served up seven songs on The South’s 2012 offering Sweet RefrainsDave and Phil decided that subsequent material would be better served free of the “golden millstone” that the previous name provided. Produced by cult producer Teo Miller (Pretenders, Placebo, Robert Plant) the band put together “COOL TO BE KIND”, an album that tells tales covering contemporary themes, as well as age-old matters of the heart and soul. All viewed through the bottom of a recently drained pint glass

“Now we’re Sunbirds we’re free to dig a little deeper into ourselves” says Phil, “while still also free to write about everything and anything else we want. As long as it’s something worth singing about. Music is a powerful vehicle and can challenge a person’s thinking. To just sing “I want to do this or that to you” seems a wasted opportunity to me”.
