A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management.

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are travelling any distance.

A guide for Artists and Promoters

The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to musicianlive2 at gmail.com once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

When is a new band, not a new band?
Answer: when its Son of MAN

When Bob Richards and George Jones left MAN in 2008 they decided they would continue to play the bands music, with George Jones's father Micky Jones being the founding member they saw it only right that he continued the family legacy.

"One of the last things my father ever said to me was, it’s up to you now to keep my music alive”.

I love the music of MAN and Micky was a huge influence musically, there was no question about it really."

When Micky Jones passed on in 2010 George Jones organised a memorial concert for him and put together a group of musicians from other well known Welsh bands including Sassafras and Tigertailz.

Son of MAN play a mixture of MAN classics and original material from their debut album, released on Cherry Red/Esoteric Recordings in winter 2016.

"It’s been an extremely rewarding experience, musically and personally. Long may it continue." - George Jones

This comprehensive survey of Joni’s career includes landmarks such as Big Yellow Taxi (her most covered song), River and A Case of You (both from the breakthrough album Blue), the radio hits of Help Me and Free Man In Paris (from double-platinum Court and Spark) and the jazz-infused stylings of In France They Kiss On Main St (The Hissing of Summer Lawns) and Coyote (Hejira).

Both Sides Now brings together a group of top-drawer musicians, led by singer Sarah Miller and keyboard player Aidan Goldstraw, whose devotion to Joni’s back catalogue shines through in performance. A native of Ohio, Cheley Tackett has been part of the Nashville music scene for roughly 20 years. Music News Nashville describes her as "an exceptional live performer, outstanding lyricist...and phenomenal singer." Her music has earned Song of the Year from Just Plain Folks as well as the top prize in the country category in the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at Merlefest. Belles and Gals calls Cheley's music "incredible" while Think Country says, "if this artist hits your town, go. Just go!!!" She is a New Folk winner from the prestigious international Kerrville Folk Festival, following in the footsteps of previous winners Lucinda Williams and Lyle Lovett. In 2015, she was voted Nashville's favorite LGBT musician by readers of Out & About. Maverick Magazine UK calls Cheley "one of the most powerful, soulful singers in the business" while Country Music People even went so far to say one of Cheley's songs "reminded me of Jackson Browne at his best." Mindy Smith, an Americana Music Association Best New Artist of the Year, is a longtime fan of Tackett's and says,"She has been a standout artist to me since day one because of her honest love of music, her connection to her roots and deep desire to tell her truth."

Cheley's latest album, Buckeye, was given a 4 out of 5 star rating in the March 2018 edition of the UK's Country Music People.

Dan Webster Band
£8.00adv £10.00door
Doors 8:00pm
Dan Webster is described as ‘one of the U.K’s best kept musical secrets and one not to miss!’ and an ‘An insightful lyricist with a great voice’ Acoustic Magazine. According to Americana UK - ‘He is the missing link, the joining point, where folk fuses with country – as good as you’ll hear on any record out of Austin or Nashville - beautiful – he is Anglicana’. Dan is a road seasoned English singer-songwriter, his music is influenced by the sounds and storytelling traditions of American and British Folk music, which he uniquely blends into his own distinct fusion of Folk and Americana.

Dan Webster played an impressive set at Maverick… performing under his name a permanent band… well honed, the mandolin of Polly Bolton, violin of Emily Lawler and cello of Rachel Brown weaving interesting lines and counter melodies… incorporates British and Celtic Folk and bluegrass but also draws on Springsteen… Country Music People Magazine

Dan Webster’s subtle exploration of the human heart resonated with me after each spin of his fine new record... which draws assuredly on folk and country roots from across the atlantic but remains assertively northern English. RnR ****

Dan’s second album release DIAMOND LAND (2008) received a number of plays on BBC Radio 2 and was well received critically in the press. His 2012 single release Frank Dalton was nominated for Fatea magazine’s track of the year and the press were unanimous about his 2015 release THE TIN MAN.

“THE TIN MAN will make it on to a fair few ‘Best Of’ lists, and deservedly so" Maverick Magazine ****

The Official Deceivers

Doors 7:30pm
In the 1980’s & 90’s, Steve Marriott played regular UK pub gigs with a variety of line ups, each one paying homage to his love of the blues and his musical past with bands such as The Small Faces & Humble Pie. Initially called Packet of Three, Marriott changed that
name to Steve Marriott & The Official Receivers, due to the fact the tax man was still chasing him for a large sum of unpaid tax! Later Steve would join forces with the now legendary Leicestershire based band The DT’s.
The Official Deceivers song list pays homage to this period of Steve Marriott’s musical career, focusing heavily on
numbers played with The DTs. Front man Malc Watson, a huge fan of both Steve Marriott and the DTs, has had the
pleasure of playing with members of Marriott’s bands on a number of occasions and considers himself fortunate to
have not only had the pleasure of witnessing him play live numerous times but also chatting to him after several gigs in the 1980’s.
Keeping the memory of Steve Marriott alive and bringing this part of his musical history to audiences across the UK is what The Official Deceivers is all about. No gig is complete without hearing the crowd singing along to All or Nothing,a high point of an evening and always performed with emotion and respect.
“If you like your RnB live, loud and full of energy then you need to see The Official Deceivers.”

The Poozies
£10.00adv £12.00door
Doors 8:00pm
The Poozies first burst onto the folk scene in 1991, when folk music wore elaborately patterned woolly jumpers and was only seen in dingy back rooms and very late at night on BBC2 – yet from the word go they were breaking out and happily exploring the musical universe.
The folk scene was then, as now, very male-dominated and so it was a conscious decision back then to be an ‘all-female’ band. The name came from a den of iniquity frequented by Robert Burns, called Poozie Nancy’s, and there is some debate amongst the four founder members as to whether the now-obvious meaning of ‘Poozie’ was realised back then… but the feeling now is that it’s pretty rock and roll!!
As with all bands that have been on the road for so long there have been various line-up changes, and although it’s probably fair to say a male may feel it’s slightly strange to be in a band with this name, there has also always been a natural choice of who will join the band and these people have also just so happened to be female. Throughout the years The Poozies have toured worldwide, and attracted recognition and appreciation for their eclectic choice of material, unusual and exciting arrangements, and heart-tugging vocal harmonies.

Featuring;
Mary Macmaster: Electro-harp, vocals
Eilidh Shaw: Fiddle, vocals
Sarah McFadyen: Fiddle, banjo, guitar, vocals
Murdo Cameron: Guitar, percussion, fiddle, vocals

Pure Purple

Doors 8:00pm
Deep Purple are one of the greatest hard rock bands in history. They have been popular worldwide and have influenced many other hard rock and heavy metal bands.

Pure Purple specialise in the era when Ian Gillan, and Roger Glover joined Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord and Ian Paice to form the classic MK 2 line up.

Pure Purple perform their songs with the same infectious energy and passion as Deep Purple did in the 1970’s and go to great lengths to sound as authentic as possible too with Marshal Amps, Hammond Organ, Fender Guitars and Leslie Speakers.

Some of the songs you can expect to hear are MKII classics such as Highway Star, Child In Time, Woman From Tokyo, Smoke on the Water, Black Night, Strange Kind of Woman, Lazy, Speed King, Fireball and from a few years later Perfect Strangers.

Through the years, Deep Purple have been known for their outstanding in-concert performances, no matter which line-up recorded them. Purple's live performances have been legendary, and over the years they have released more live recordings than almost any other band.

Albums from the MK 2 era include ‘In Rock’, ‘Fireball’, ‘Machine Head’, ‘Made in Japan’ and later included ‘Perfect Strangers’ and ‘Hell or High Water’.

The Pat McManus Band are a powerful three piece blues/rock trio, headed up by the former Mama's Boys and Celtus guitarist/violinist virtuoso and true gent Pat McManus (AKA The Professor).

Pat is today considered to be one of the last remaining individual guitar heroes from a generation of Irish guitarists, after the sad and early loss of both Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore. He formed Mama's Boys with his brothers John and Tommy in the eighties. The band, although very young, soon proved to be a great success in the world of rock ’n’ roll and were one of the greatest rock bands to come out of Northern Ireland. They are perhaps best known for their hits 'Needle in the Groove' and their cover of Slade’s ‘Mama Weer all Crazy Now’.

Doors 8:00pm
La Villa Strangiato is an italian project, started in 2010 by Gabriele Ferrari and Carlo Fattorini, two roman musicians who had already worked together in the project "Yessongs Italy", with which they gained international praise. The purpose of La Villa Strangiato is to revive Rush's production of the '70s and first '80s, the period of their maximum popularity.

The band formed in 2010 and, thanks to the contribution of several friends and musicians, finally presented their first show (entirely dedicated to the album "Exit Stage Left") in Rome in March 2011. From then on, they started playing in several clubs across Europe with good results; but it's with the contribution of musician Claudio Sinisi (guitar) that they finally achieved the perfect combination of sound and technique.

The band present classics such as In The Mood and Working Man, as well as obscure tracks which very rarely get aired by Rush themselves plus favourites such as Xanadu, 2112, The Spirit Of Radio and many more.

For this show, the band will perform the third live album A Show Of Hands in its entirety, a must see for any Rush diehard.
