A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management.

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are travelling any distance.

A guide for Artists and Promoters

The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to musicianlive2 at gmail.com once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

Coalescing in the early 80s and fronted by twin brothers Jay and Michael Aston, Gene Loves Jezebel became popular on the Indie scene, and by 1985 had established a settled line-up with the additions of Pete Rizzo on bass, Chris Bell on drums and James Stevenson (The Cult/The Alarm) on guitar. Consequently signing to Beggars Banquet, they gained a following throughout Europe and the USA and toured with the likes of David Bowie, Billy Idol, Echo and the Bunnymen and New Order.

Following the departure of Michael in 1988 and the imploding of their record label, Savage Records in 1993, the band pursued various projects until the 1999 release of a new batch of tracks, in VII. Further touring followed, and in 2017 'Dance Underwater' was released. Produced by Peter Walsh, it featured a string arrangement by Tony Visconti.

The band released their tenth studio album 'X - Love Death Sorrow' last year, to very positive reviews.

Doors 8:00pm
The queens of banjopunk, three Swedish sisters by the name of Baskery, who’ve played music since they were old enough to hold an instrument. Baskery play a combination of classic ‘roots music and Americana’ with a twist of rule breaking punk turn this much loved style of music on it’s head. Their sound oozes style and playfulness and has helped them accrue a number of plaudits and accolades.

The first album, “Fall Among Thieves” (2008) was recorded in Stockholm, co-produced by Lasse Mårtén (Pink, ‘Peter, Bjorn and John’, Kelly Clarkson, Lykke Li, Primal Scream ). It quickly established them as an act that people took seriously. In the years that followed they’ve released several albums and EPs working with the likes of Blackpete (Depeche Mode, Joe Jackson, Peter Fox), Matt Wignall (Cold War Kids, J. Roddy Walston, Wargirl) and were also signed by Dan McCarroll (President and A&R) to Warner Music. ”Coyote & Sirens” their most recent offering was released in October 2018, produced and engineered by Andrew Dawson (Kanye West, Rolling Stones, f.u.n, The Revivalists).

Hannah Horton Quartet
£14.00adv £5 NUS
Doors 7:30pm
Hannah Horton is an artist who goes her own way. As an award-winning, Selmer endorsed saxophonist and composer, a bandleader, and a successful recording artist, her strong, clear tone, powerful rhythmic sense and compelling sense of melody make her an unmistakable voice on the scene.

As a bandleader, she has been working with the same group of talented musicians for fifteen years: as composer, she released her second album

Inside Out in 2021 to overwhelmingly positive reviews, receiving a Parliamentary Jazz Award nomination for Best Newcomer: as a performer, she’s played at all of the UK’s most prominent jazz venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, The Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican, and the 606 Jazz Club, selling out her London Jazz Festival shows. Recognition from the musical establishment has come in the form of awards, endorsements and diplomas, but it’s the way that audiences respond to her unashamedly positive, uninhibitedly personal music, and the emotional honesty of her accessible, engaging take on jazz that delivers the definitive accolade. Hannah’s music always prioritises melody and a sense of playfulness to create a very personal take on jazz that is informed equally by a strong affinity to groove. There are echoes of some of her favourites like Mark Lockheart and Tim Garland, and classical composers like Gerald Finzi - but ultimately there’s no-one else who sounds quite like her - a Melodic Maverick.

Artistic transformation is often associated with a blast of fanfare – the dramatic unveiling of a new look, or lofty announcement of the revelation that prompted such a change. In the case of Benjamin Francis Leftwich, reinvention transpires with significantly more subtlety on his latest album, Some Things Break.

Leftwich’s singing style, redolent of Frank Sinatra or Edith Piaf; each piano note lands like those rays of light bursting through clouded heavens, bright and full of promise.

Josienne Clarke
£16.00adv £19.00door
Doors 8:00pm
Indie-folk singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer Josienne Clarke is often said to draw on traditional British folk inspirations, but is a thoroughly modern, multifaceted artist who follows her own compass.

Blessed with a voice of crystalline beauty and clarity that has been compared to Sandy Denny, her myriad talents translate effortlessly to the live space in performances that are all her own. She has extensive touring experience having been a Rough Trade-signed, Radio 2 Folk Award-winning artist – two opposing poles that neatly sum up her inability to be pigeonholed – and has also been hand-picked as main tour support for folk legend Richard Thompson. She’s shared a stage with Robert Plant and has written songs for an adaptation of The Snow Queen for the National Theatre, performed by children aged 7-11.

Her varied background and effortless musicality mean a cover of Radiohead is just as likely to appear on the setlist as Nick Drake, as on her recent “Now & Then” EP live – hence she’s been able to slot seamlessly into the bill of the Shrewsbury Folk Festival as easily as that of End of the Road.

As well as being a guitarist and vocalist of alarmingly good quality, her unforgettably dark wit also acts as compelling counterpoint to her own twilit, low-key and intimate compositions when playing live. Clarke’s rare authenticity – really the main unifying thread running through her career – is something to admire: here is an artist singularly unafraid to express herself via her art and is naturally armed with all the verve and ability to do so – and bring the audience with her.

The Dirt Road Band is the brainchild of guitar legend Steve Walwyn, mainly known as the longest serving guitar player in Dr Feelgood (32yrs). During this time he amassed a massive reputation as a bona fide blues hero in the UK, Europe and beyond. He says "I'd always liked the idea of the power trio - stripping everything back to the basics: guitar, bass & drums. To help him in this he has recruited the services of drummer Ted Duggan, professional since the 60's including stints with Badfinger and techno giants Banco de Gaia. "I'd worked with Ted before" Steve says, "I knew he would fit this gig perfectly" ...he certainly does.

Bass player Horace Panter is better known as a founding member of The Specials. Horace has "groove" printed on his DNA, holding it down comes as second nature. This then is Steve's dream team rhythm section that swings as hard as it rocks. "We're starting to develop that musical telepathy that makes a band more than the sum of its' parts. It's a thrilling thing and keeps the blues alive".

Blackbeard's Tea Party ~ High Octane, Gutsy Folk Rock

Their bold and riotous modern folk rock is built for late nights and big stages. Hold on to your tricorn hats and be prepared to stamp your wooden legs – Blackbeard’s Tea Party are in town.

Sea-shanties will be given a bombastic rock edge, and folk instrumentals will become late-night floor-fillers when this raucous bunch of reprobates hit the stage. They have dirt under their fingernails and a twinkle in their eyes, and you can expect fantastic musicianship, playful choreography and an unstoppable urge to move your body.

Two drummers, electric guitars, fiddle, melodeon and 4-part harmonies combine to create music that is drenched in tradition, but filtered through a kaleidoscope of modern rock and pop.

The band believe a live show should be a spectacle for the eyes as well as the ears. Outlandish outfits, costume changes, DIY props, unhinged stage antics and chaotic choreography all add up to an engaging, high-octane show that inevitably leaves audiences cheering for more.

The band are currently back into the studio recording material for 'Coats Off' their first new album in 5 years. This will be released in the Autumn of 2024 & they will be out on tour from October to December performing this new material.
