A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management.

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are travelling any distance.

A guide for Artists and Promoters

The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to musicianlive2 at gmail.com once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

The Lou Kyme Band, playing an original rootsy/rocky country sound influenced by the best of England, Texas and Tennessee. With Lou Kyme, vocals, guitar, accordion + Jim Maving guitar, slide guitar + Joe Hazell, bass + Neil Findlay, drums.

Having played and toured as part of Southampton based family band the Okeh Wranglers through the late 1990s, Lou Kyme launched her debut solo album 'What's The Worst That Can Happen' this past year. Recorded with former Green on Red maestro Chuck Prophet and the Mission Express in San Francisco she is now playing UK dates to support her album.

With a wry smile, a Blondie attitude, and the heartfelt honesty of Hank Williams, Lou Kyme's striking songwriting is making a name for itself. A new name on the scene, and one to watch.

"a startling, box-fresh sounding debut album that’s sneaked in under the radar and deserves to be up there with the best releases of this mad, mad year"

Doors 8:00pm
“I’m not sure if it gets much better, either in terms of music from the North-East or terms of bluegrass, than The Often Herd”Mark Walsh, BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

Bluegrass band The Often Herd transcend the traditional boundaries of the genre. Although they might resemble an American string band, complete with driving energy, tight vocal harmonies and dazzling instrumental interplay, their vibrant, transatlantic sound is deeply coloured by their surroundings; the striking natural and industrial landscapes of Northern England. This unique approach won them the title of “Best European Bluegrass Band 2018”at the prestigious La Roche Bluegrass Festivalin France.

Rupert Hughes (guitar) and Evan Davies (mandolin), write songs steeped in personal experience whilst drawing from a wide pool of influences ranging from old-time to psychedelia. American-born fiddler Niles Krieger and jazz bassist Sam Quintana add fiery instrumental skills to the mix, launching the band’s arrangements into the stratosphere. Together, their sound is both boldly contemporary and soothingly familiar, taking time-honoured traditions to new places with a fresh perspective.

The band have an impressive number of festivals booked this Summer (including The Long Road, Broadstairs Music Week, Ely Folk Festival& Priddy Folk Festival) and have previously showcased atIBMA Bluegrass RambleandAmericana Music Week, Hackney. They released their debut album‘Where The Big Lamp Shines’in June 2022, recorded with producer Tom Moore(Slow Worm Records, Moore, Moss, Rutter).

Kossoff - The Band Plays On
£20.00adv £25.00door
Doors 7:30pm
Terry Slesser, one of the country’s finest rock and blues vocalists, performing in tribute to his bandmate and friend the late, great Paul Kossoff - one of the greatest rock blues guitarists of all time. Celebrating Paul Kossoff’s entire career, the show features songs from his early days in FREE (including rock classics ALL RIGHT NOW, WISHING WELL, FIRE AND WATER etc.) through to songs from BACK STREET CRAWLER, the band Kossoff formed alongside Terry Slesser. Terry Slesser remains both a star and a master craftsman. As Paul Kossoff’s close friend and vocalist of choice, he has every right to sing every song performed by this band. Terry has assembled a great team of musicians to willingly assist him in keeping alive the memory of Paul Kossoff.

The band also features: John ‘Rhino’ Edwards, bassist with the world-famous Status Quo, Judie Tzuke, Dexy’s and Peter Green. Drummer Clive Edwards, whose resumé includes UFO, Wild Horses, Uli Jon Roth, Pat Travers. Guitarist John Buckton is relatively unknown in comparison to his band mates, but was recently reviewed as "one of the very best guitarists in British rock blues today, with a style that’s tasteful and subtle, yet which wails with true blues aggression". SIMON KIRKE himself has already said that were FREE ever to reform, John would be his choice. This is no two-bit collection of raggle-taggle pub-rock wannabes playing cover versions. This an authentic supergroup, and to all intents and purposes a direct continuation of BACK STREET CRAWLER.

Doors 8:00pm
September 2022 sees the launch of ‘Gracious Wings’, the 8th solo studio album by Jackie Oates. Jackie has once again been working with producer and sound engineer Richard Evans in Bath, to produce an 11 piece album of traditional English folk songs, self-penned material and the odd unexpected cover version!

The album features collaborations with John Spiers, Mike Cosgrave, Jon Wilks, Megan Henwood and John Parker, with cover artwork by the wonderful puppet maker and illustrator, Jo Elizabeth May.

In September/October 2022, The Jackie Oates Trio, featuring Mike Cosgrave (piano, accordion, guitar) and John Parker (double bass) will commence a UK tour in which they perform material from the new album.

The title ‘Gracious Wings’ refers to a chance conversation that Jackie had with a friend, about the nature of music and songs and songwriting. Through the telling of a true story, the teller may gain access to another world in which they are unburdened by their past.

Jackie Oates is an English Folk Musician, Singer, Performer and Educator. Jackie lives in Oxfordshire with her young family. After 17 years and seven solo albums Jackie Oates is a central figure in the accomplished, informed and stylistically individual English traditional music scene that began in the early 2000s and continues to thrive.

Jackie Oates continues to bring elements of the English folk tradition to new people and places; in turn bringing a much-needed calm and joy to those who hear it.

The Small Faces are without any shadow of doubt, one of the most sensational British bands of the 1960s, and are as much a part of the soundtrack to the fabbest decade ever as The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks, The Who, or anyone else for that matter!

Hitting the charts as teenage mods with their very first disc, 'Whatcha Gonna Do About It', the four diminutive Cockneys went on to release numerous timeless classics including, ‘Sha-La-La-La-Lee’, ‘Here Come The Nice’, ‘Itchycoo Park’ and ‘Lazy Sunday’.

The Small Fakers were officially launched on a chilly night in February 2007 at a central London shindig attended by fans and associates of the East End's very own fab four, the seminal, sensational Small Faces. The buzz in the audience that night was intense. Could the SMALL FAKERS even hope to come close to replicating the sound, and the look, of the Small Faces.

Warner E. Hodges Band + Ryan Hamilton

It’s an undisputed fact that Warner E. Hodges is one of the most instantly recognisable guitarists playing today. Steve Earle reckons he’s “world class”, according to Raul Malo of the Mavericks “there is no finer example of what rock ’n’ roll is” and Ginger Wildheart says “let no one tell you that anyone else does it better”.

From his early days guitar slinging in Jason & the Scorchers to more than a decade with Dan Baird & Homemade Sin and a parallel solo career that has produced five ace albums so far, Warner E. Hodges is a man who knows how to rock and his live shows are famous for their excitement, intensity and power. With Ben Marsden (guitar), Jason Knight (bass) and John Powney (drums), Warner has a band capable of running Black Sabbath into Merle Haggard and back out into AC/DC.

Signed to Steven van Zandt’s Wicked Cool label, Ryan Hamilton makes records “for any fan of classic rock ’n’ roll and power-pop” (The Indy Review) that are “a thoroughly enjoyable listen” (Americana UK). For Adam Duritz of Counting Crows it’s simpler, he’s “just fantastic” and his latest album ‘1221’, a mix of classic covers and originals recorded during the pandemic, was a Top Ten Independent Album on the UK charts. Making music that’s melodic and hooky with a power-pop sensibility while never losing sight of his country roots Hamilton will put a smile on your face and a spring in your step. Tonight Ryan will be backed by Warner’s superb band.

"It is easy to compare Terry’s heritage and storytelling to that of Jackson Browne, James Taylor or Bruce Springsteen.. A symphonic delight for the heart and soul." ~ Americana UK 9/10

Whatever magic potion the troubadours in Laurel Canyon were sipping on in 1971, Jesse Terry has managed to track it down and take a deep gulp. Now on his seventh album, When We Wander, Terry performs his beautifully crafted songs to around 150 audiences a year from Bonnaroo to the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the 30A Song-writers Festival to Americana Fest. Recorded live, When We Wander prioritises emotion and raw performances over perfection. 'In Spite of You' recalls his stay in a residential facility for behavior modification that traumatized him as a young teenager: "The sermons that you sold me all were fakes."Yet he emerged to earn a degree from Berklee College of Music, net a five-year staff writer gigon Nashville's Music Row penning material for major TV networks, and win prestigious songwriting awards.. And then to become the singer-songwriter his countless fans know today, who (in the words of Music News Nashville)"bring[s] to mind iconic artist/poets like Paul Simon and Jackson Browne.... [with] a performance that touches the heart like only a whisper can."

“Bringing a refreshing glimmer of hope and an abundance of heart and positivity,British singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Emma Stevens first picked up a guitar at the age of two and has since learnt cello, piano, banjo, ukulele, mandolin and bass. Emma achieved four consecutive play-listed singles on BBC Radio 2, extensive international radio play in the UK, Europe and Australia, an iTunes single of the week with her song "Riptide", sold out headline shows and supported The Feeling, Take That, Wet Wet Wet, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Train, Albert Lee and Simply Red to name a few! Emma's catchy pop melodies and folky instrumentation has been used on many TV shows on BBC, ITV, Sky and Channel 4, and even featured on a TV show in China which was broadcast to 75 million people, receiving a whopping 500 million streams in China after! Since losing her Mum to cancer in 2012, Emma has dedicated her life to her music, writing messages of positivity, hope and love. Her music breathes life and honesty, and is re-establishing a lyrical connection with her audience, something seemingly so absent from an overcrowded marketplace.

“With the Seahorses over his shoulder, Helme continues to create glorious music in his own name.”

Chris Helme first rose to prominence as the front man of John Squire’s post-Stone Roses band ‘The Seahorses’ which saw him touring extensively and sharing the stage with The Rolling Stones, U2 and Oasis in numerous support slots. Now solo- he is still rightfully remembered for Britpop classics ‘Love Is The Law’ and ‘Blinded By The Sun’ – songs that evoked everything the 90’s stood for, the excitement, the culture and the bands that provided a voice in a period of political and social imbalance.
Chris’ enviable back catalogue, is bolstered further by his acclaimed works with The Yards, but it’s his last solo album ‘The Rookery’ that portrays him at his very best. The album combines melody with imaginative, intricate, three-way guitar interplay that brings each track to a lush, blossoming climax. Add to this Chris’ keen ear for arranging, plus some brooding string passages and it becomes the perfect platform for his wonderful songs. Melodies rooted in traditional folk are reimagined on an album of rich variation, testament to his most powerful weapon – his voice.

The Enid
£18.00adv £23.00door
Doors 8:00pm
The Enid began recording at about the same time as punk rock burst upon the music scene. Godfrey has said that he always regarded The Enid's ironic takes on classical music as being just as anarchic as anything by the Sex Pistols, but this did not translate into either musical or commercial recognition, despite their work being played frequently by Tommy Vance on BBC Radio One's Friday Rock Show. However, unique among progressive rock bands, the Enid secured a fan base which significantly overlapped with the punk rock fan base. Thanks largely to their quirky appearance and stage act, they built a sizable campus following even while under the shadow of the punk movement.

Early albums were entirely instrumental due to the suicide of founding vocalist Peter Roberts on New Year's Day 1975, shortly before rehearsals for the band's debut album In the Region of the Summer Stars; the band considered Roberts to be irreplaceable.

The band's record label, Pye Records, folded on the eve of releasing a double compilation album, Rhapsody in Rock, leaving the Enid with substantial bills and no income to cover them. Only continued touring kept the band afloat. In 1981, the Enid were Kim Wilde's backing band on her self-titled debut album. However, according to Godfrey, because the album was recorded in the Enid's studio, they were paid only "a pittance" for their work on it. During this period founding member Francis Lickerish was ousted from the Enid following a failed attempt to take leadership of the group from Godfrey.

The band's fifth album, Something Wicked This Way Comes, released in 1983, was the first Enid album to feature lyrics, which were written by then-drummer Chris North and sung in a mock-operatic style by Godfrey. The release was a concept album dealing with the threat of nuclear warfare and the various ways in which people respond to it.

The Enid released no full-length albums between 1997 and 2010, when Journey's End was released, although 2009's Arise and Shine featured newly remixed and partly re-recorded tracks from previous albums plus one preview of a Journey's End track.

In December 2012, the band's thirteenth album Invicta was voted 9th in The Guardian's "Readers' albums of 2012" poll, with "The One and the Many" placed 6th in the "Readers' tracks of 2012" category.

In June 2013, it was revealed that the band's sole remaining founding member Robert John Godfrey had been diagnosed with early Alzheimer's disease, and that as a result he was retiring from the band. The band opted to continue, with Godfrey's consent, following his departure.

In April 2018 Godfrey announced his return to the band. A brain scan intended to determine the progress of his Alzheimer's disease showed no presence of Alzheimer's at all.[16] In January 2020, The Enid consisted of two members, Godfrey and Ducker, and they were working on the new album U, which earlier was intended to be released as a Godfrey solo album called Homily.
Expect a fine show featuring Enid classics from their albums.

Suthering, the musical alias of Julu Irvine & Heg Brignall, have taken the folk scene by storm with their unusual and fresh approach to folk music. Their harmony-rich songs tell tales of struggle and triumph against all odds; of heroes from both their own lives and from stories they have found. Inspired by strong female characters in history, mythology, and personal experience, and with an unusual mix of cascading, dramatic piano; intricate, fingerstyle guitar; flute, whistles and harmonium, Suthering bring an exciting take on folk storytelling with their evocative and distinctive sound.

Alongside their captivating original music, the duo seek out traditional songs with female characters at the fore, upholding and unearthing the female heroines of folk. And where the story ends with heart-break or death for these forgotten women, Julu and Heg have re-written the endings allowing the poor heart-broken maids to rise into triumphant heroes.

Having gained individual recognition across the folk and popular music scenes including BBC Introducing, Cambridge, Sidmouth, Glastonbury and other major festivals, Suthering combine a wonderful chemistry and charisma on stage, with their powerful song-writing and crisp vocal harmonies to create a beautiful, pure sound.

It transcends boundaries and takes listeners on a timeless journey. With a genuine passion for storytelling, she weaves personal narratives into every note. Having to ‘settle’ down in several countries throughout her life, her lyrics often reflect struggles and challenges when starting from zero in a new environment, creating new bonds and finding a community to belong to. Wearing influences of Janis Ian, Joni Mitchell and the well-traveled folk of Paul Simon, Jana has her own distinct voice that continues to evolve.

gig will be postponed with details of a new date to be announced asap. Refunds possible or your tickets willbe valid for the new date.

Jennifer Crook’s classic songwriting - rich with poetic imagery and earthy wisdom - is both timeless and right on time. Celebrating the release of her highly anticipated new album ‘The Broken Road Back Home’ with a UK tour, Jennifer brings a stellar new band and an exciting new musical landscape to a set of songs that encompass themes of perseverance, overcoming, and holding onto hope through the darker times.

Jennifer’s collaborations include Boo Hewerdine, Eddi Reader and Nashville’s Darrell Scott, touring with Snow Patrol, Declan O’Rourke and many others. She has worked with producers like Stephen W Taylor (Kate Bush) at Real World Studios, appeared live in session for The Bob Harris Show and was invited to contribute to ‘Girl with Guitar’ on BBC Radio 2 celebrating the work of Joni Mitchell. In 2020, Jennifer’s atmospheric single ‘Sea Glass’ was described as ‘deeply poignant’ by Fatea and received national airplay. “I absolutely love that” Mark Radcliffe, The Folk Show, BBC Radio 2.

The new record was co-produced with multi-platinum recording engineer/producer Stuart Bruce (Band Aid, Van Morrison, Art Garfunkel, Madeleine Peyroux, to name a few), who also plays bass in the band, along with Joe Coombs on electric guitars (Yola, Jaime Wyatt, Annie Keating) and award-winning drummer Rob Brian (Goldfrapp, Loreena McKennitt, Siouxsie Sioux). An evening not to miss, Jennifer’s songs remind us that there is beauty to be found in broken places and that love is always showing us the way home.

Banter
£15.00adv
Doors 8:00pm
Banter are Nina Zella, Simon Care, Tim Walker and Mark Jolley. Four fine musicians whose roots are firmly in the traditional English genre, but who enjoy stretching the limits – in what a lot of people refer to as ‘the quirky Banter twist”. Formed in 2015, due to a happy
accident, they immediately realised their common love for traditional English song and dance and began to mess around with it.

They gained popularity, or should it be notoriety, very quickly and were soon performing at many of the country’s largest festivals, including Glastonbury, Cambridge FF, Sidmouth FF and Towersey.

With the release of three albums, YES, DARE and THREE, between 2017 and 2021, they received more plaudits in the music press including a Valentines day session on Mark Radcliffe’s Radio 2 Folk Show.

Now firmly established as one of the UK’s finest bands they have recorded their fourth studio album “Heroes”. Their second album of traditional material ….. but with that “twist” Described as “the world’s smallest big band”, Banter go from strength to strength.

“Banter were amazing. Fantastic harmonies and great playing” – Ralph McTell 2023
