A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management.

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are travelling any distance.

A guide for Artists and Promoters

The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to musicianlive2 at gmail.com once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

Small Fakers
£11.00adv
The Small Faces are without any shadow of doubt, one of the most sensational British bands of the 1960s, and are as much a part of the soundtrack to the fabbest decade ever as The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks, The Who, or anyone else for that matter!
Hitting the charts as teenage mods with their very first disc, 'Whatcha Gonna Do About It', the four diminutive Cockneys went on to release numerous timeless classics including, ‘Sha-La-La-La-Lee’, ‘Here Come The Nice’, ‘Itchycoo Park’ and ‘Lazy Sunday’.

The Small Fakers were officially launched on a chilly night in February 2007 at a central London shindig attended by fans and associates of the East End's very own fab four, the seminal, sensational Small Faces.
The buzz in the audience that night was intense. Could the SMALL FAKERS even hope to come close to replicating the sound, and the look, of the Small Faces

Spear of Destiny
£20.00adv
Doors 8:00pm - 11:55pm
Hard to believe we know but it is true, Kirk Brandon has now been leading SPEAR OF DESTINY for over 37 years.

SPEAR OF DESTINY were formed in 1983 after the demise of Kirk Brandon’s post punk iconic rockers THEATRE OF HATE. (Brandon had also, before TOH, been the main man in every punk rockers favourite band of that era The Pack)

The current line up of Spear is the longest serving to date and features Adrian Portas (New Model Army / Sex Gang Children), Craig Adams (Sisters of Mercy / The Cult / The Mission) and Phil Martini (Jim Jones and the Righteous Mind) on drums. Long time Brandon cohort Steve Allan-Jones will be covering the keyboards. During 2019 the line up was boasted by Saxofanist Clive Osborne who will be staying in the line up for 2020.

The current live show pulls on songs from all 37+ years of SOD. The classic’s Liberator, Mickey, Rainmaker, The Wheel, Never Take Me Alive etc… are all found sitting closely alongside newer fan favourites such as Pskotik, Age of Unreason, Lucky Man & Mr Livingston!’.
As 2020 is the 35 anniversary of the band's best known long player “Worldservice” live shows throughout this year will most certainly feature a good smattering of WS tracks for good measure.

Comments on Kirk Brandon and Spear of Destiny:
The BBC’s Jeremy Vine says, “@kirkbrandon is one of our greatest musical geniuses”

John Robb’s Louder Than War “Spear of Destiny are criminally underrated and are one of Britain’s best, Boys Own, punch the air, grandiose Rock’nRoll bands.

Mojo wrote: “Kirk Brandon is on of the UK’s best kept secrets”.

On SOD's previous studio album ‘31’(Thirty-One).
BBC Radio’s Jools Holland: “possibly [Spear of Destiny’s] best album in 20 years”

Louder Than War: 9/10 Brandon puts his all into every song with epic bombast, coming across as a tragic rock n roll anti-hero. He is the Wagner of rock n roll. And the haircut’s still pretty cool.

Aberdeen Voice: Thirty years together makes for flawless instrumentals, a unique sound, and some remarkable riffs and harmonies.

Jesse Malin
£15.00adv £18.00door
Doors 7:00pm - 10:00pm
Well, it's been a while! Welcome back Jesse. Looking foreword to catching up.

Jesse Malin— whom the London Times says “writes vivid songs with killer tunes and sings them with scary conviction”— and Lucinda Williams— the southern troubadour once named “America’s best songwriter” by Time magazine— first met in the early 2000s at a jazz club in NYC’s West Village. In a joint 2017 Rolling Stone interview, the two discussed their “shared love of miscreants, misfits, the misunderstood and the mysteries of everyday lives binds them across the Mason-Dixon line.”

“From the early frontier days of hardcore in New York to all the punk rock and singer/songwriter touring,” says Malin, “it’s all been about survival and reinvention. I wanted to make an open-sounding record with the space to tell these stories. I like to write about characters and people I meet along the way. The dreamers, schemers, hustlers, romantics, lovers, leavers and believers.” Many of the dreamers, schemers and so on from Jesse’s own life contribute to Sunset Kids, his new album of highly personal songsbeing released August 30 on Wicked Cool Records.

Sunset Kids first took shape at The Hollywood Bowl, when Jesse accepted Lucinda’s invitation to see her open for what turned out to be Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers’ final concert. The bittersweet experience inspired one of the new album’s highlights, “Shining Down,” a rainy day jangle about “keeping alive the spirits of the ones we’ve lost.” During that same visit, the idea came about of three-time Grammy-winning Lucinda producing Jesse’s next record.

“Lucinda has a great eye for finding the beauty in broken things and a knack for always picking the right take. Once she started dancing in the control room, we knew we had it.”

In addition to this rare turn in the producer’s chair for Williams, she co-wrote and sang on the evocative Country-flavored “Room 13,” which Malin calls “the heart of the record in a lot of ways, about those meditative moments far away from home, where you’re forced to reflect on the things that really matter.”

The album also features “Chemical Heart,” an upbeat pop basher located at a mythical point on Queens Boulevard where Paul Simon and The Ramones intersect, name checking Bernie Taupin and Jake LaMotta among others. “Shane” is a gentle ballad about one of his heroes, the lovably shambolic Shane MacGowanof The Pogues.

“My first album, The Fine Art Of Self-Destruction, was about finding glory in the wreckage,” says Malin of the album which was upon release Uncut’s “Album of the Month.” “Sunset Kids is about owning it. The failures, the victories, the moments. And moving up from there.”

After reflecting on his life while walking the streets of London, jamming riffs in an East Village basement and writing songs in Florida hotel rooms while visiting his ailing father, the ambitious 14-song album was recorded on both coasts between the two artists’ touring schedules.

It opens with the pre-apocalyptic confession “Meet Me At The End Of The World Again,” which includes backing vocals by Malin confidante and collaborator Joseph Arthur. Another key guest contribution comes courtesy of Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, who co-wrote and sang on “Strangers & Thieves.”

“Billie Joe was in town and I showed him where we hung out when we were kids in the hardcore days,” Malin recalls. “A couple days later, I got a text and he had finished the song. He went into the details of his experience in the Bay Area with that scene, and also my experiences, which were very parallel in New York.”

Those early days found a young Jesse “riding the subway trains from Queens to the record stores and nightclubs in dirty, pre-Disney New York City” and never looking back. His band Heart Attack put out the first New York hardcore single “God Is Dead” when Malin was 14 years old. He later went on to acclaim as the frontman for the fast and loud D Generation, whose albums were produced by Ric Ocasek, Tony Visconti and David Bianco.

Bianco is one of the Sunset Kids referenced in the album’s title. The engineer who won a Grammy for his pristine sonics on Tom Petty’s Wildflowers and produced the first major-label release of Jesse’s career passed away suddenly after overseeing the initial sessions for Sunset Kids in his L.A. studio.

“Playing music is something I need to do. Singing under those hot lights every night is a great exorcism. We get to put together this pirate ship of characters and go around the world making trouble and singing our guts out.”

As the line in crucial cut “When You’re Young” says, “Don’t waste your life on things that don’t get better.” Malin concludes: “It’s about finding ways to survive and navigate through all this stuff. Being compassionate and loving in a world that will break your heart. But you’re still here. You wake up again and put one foot in front of the other and live every day like it could be your last.”

“With the Seahorses over his shoulder, Helme continues to create glorious music in his own name.”
Chris Helme first rose to prominence as the front man of John Squire’s post-Stone Roses band ‘The Seahorses’ which saw him touring extensively and sharing the stage with The Rolling Stones, U2 and Oasis in numerous support slots. Now solo- he is still rightfully remembered for Britpop classics ‘Love Is The Law’ and ‘Blinded By The Sun’ – songs that evoked everything the 90’s stood for, the excitement, the culture and the bands that provided a voice in a period of political and social imbalance.
Chris’ enviable back catalogue, is bolstered further by his acclaimed works with The Yards, but it’s his last solo album ‘The Rookery’ that portrays him at his very best. The album combines melody with imaginative, intricate, three-way guitar interplay that brings each track to a lush, blossoming climax. Add to this Chris’ keen ear for arranging, plus some brooding string passages and it becomes the perfect platform for his wonderful songs. Melodies rooted in traditional folk are reimagined on an album of rich variation, testament to his most powerful weapon – his voice.

Nick Harper
By arrangement with RMT Music Present
£12.00adv £14.00door
NICK HARPER is one the UK’s best kept musical secrets. Those who have witnessed the spellbinding, one-man show will tell you this. A childhood growing up surrounded by the musical prowess of some of the 60’s most revered songwriters & musicians, not to mention being son of Roy Harper, along with 20 years of crafting songs & touring the land has spawned a truly one-off, original guitarist & songwriter who stands alone as a UK great, to be cherished & revered.

For over two decades, he has been dazzling audiences, reviewers & fellow artists alike with his heady
mix of virtuosity, boyish charm, showmanship & sheer bravado. An imagination bursting with ideas has
seen Nick release 11 solo albums to critical acclaim, earning a Number 1 spot in the charts with the seminal hit ‘Blue Sky Thinking'.
More recently, in 2017, Nick recorded his full band album Lies! Lies! Lies! with legendary producer
Tchad Blake at Studio La Fabrique, South France (studio of choice for Nick Cave, Morrissey & Radiohead). The album received strong support from BBC 6 Music coupled with Nick & band being greeted by rapturous, capacity crowds on the tour that followed.
Early 2018 saw Nick return to the live circuit with a newly formed solo set featuring quadraphonic sound & reimaginations of songs pre-chosen, by request, by Nick’s fan base. The ‘100 Things’ tour proved to
be a hugely successful return to the stage with all but a handful of shows selling out.
2018 also saw Nick Harper perform his first spoken word piece, A Wiltshire Tale, at some of UK’s most prestigious venues. It is a journey through Wiltshire’s (where Nick later grew up) history, landscape &
wildlife. Depicted through the voices of three characters, this one-man show bears witness to this most
magical of counties in spoken word, poetry & live music.
2019 Nick embraced his legacy and extensively toured the UK with the award-winning show, 58
Fordwych Road. It centred around a living room in a small flat in Kilburn, London in the mid 1960s. Then the abode of up-and-coming singer-songwriter Roy Harper & his wife Mocy. The flat was an after hours hang-out for the legends who played at Les Cousins in Soho at the height of the acoustic explosion in swingin’ sixties London. People like Bert Jansch, Davy Graham, John Renbourn, Paul Simon, Marc Bolan, Sandy Denny & others dropped in, to drop out, jam & try new tunes. But, all along, there was
someone else there… a toddler, part of the family, inhaling the music & absorbing the vibe; Roy’s young
son, Nick Harper. This heart-warming show that saw Nick play renditions of the great’s masterpieces
and was a rare opportunity for fans to hear Nick perform his father’s material – needless to say it was fiercely endorsed by his fans.
Nick has recently set off into deep Harperspace to retrieve his new album which will be available in Autumn 2020 to accompany one of his most extensive UK tours to date. Keep an eye for updates as one of the UK’s most loved creative pioneers begins to unveil his latest work…

North Shields singer/songwriter Aaron Duff performs and releases with his band under the moniker Hector Gannet, named after his grandad’s converted fishing trawler which sank off the coast of England in 1968.
Hector Gannet first garnered attention from audiences and the music industry when Aaron wrote and released an original score to vintage archive film footage of North East England, commissioned by North East Film Archive as part of a wider project with BFI for their ‘Moving North: Coastal Series’.

In 2019, Hector Gannet broke onto the national scene when they toured the length and breadth of the UK to sell out crowds, supporting Brit awardee and friend, Sam Fender. With this new-found audience, Hector Gannet released their eagerly awaited debut album ‘Big Harcar’ to critical acclaim in 2020: a collection of hard hitting, melodic indie-rock songs with subtle folk inflections and politically charged lyrics.
‘Big Harcar’ was championed by 6music and XFM and lauded by Louder Than War as ‘album of the year’ listing Hector Gannet as “a band that might change your life”. They subsequently signed a world-wide publishing deal with Wipe Out Music (Sleaford Mods) and tracks from the album have been featured on TV and radio.

Alex Rex is Alex Neilson - drummer for the international underground, including Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Shirley Collins, Jandek and Current 93 - abandoning the folk-rock pomp of his previous band Trembling Bells for something darker and wilder.

Founding member and chief songwriter of critically acclaimed folk revivalists Trembling Bells, Alex Rex is the nom de guerre of Alex Neilson - drummer to some of the most innovative musicians on the international underground, including Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Shirley Collins, Jandek and Current 93. Alex has synthesised the agonised self-invention and charismatic death-drive of these artists into his solo vehicle - abandoning the folk-rock pomp of his previous band Trembling Bells for something darker and wilder.

Following the critical success of his second solo album Otterburn (2019) which was a heartfelt response to his brothers sudden death on 2017 Alex Rex returns with songs of love, loss and loathing in his third vehicle ANDROMEDA on independent label Tin Angel

ANDROMEDA is a game of emotional snakes and ladders. It's the product of two years spent in therapy, the gym and on Tinder. It opens with the voice of folk legend Shirley Collins in "Song of Self Doubt" - a sparse assemblage of spoken words layered on bright chimes and birdsong. And from there we wander down corridors of cruelty, recklessness and recrimination.

"I Am Happy" is a gut-punch to the brain. Think classic-era Nick Cave but without the gothic posturing. "Haunted House" is a ghost-rock ballad about an emotional poltergeist looking for love. "Rottweilers" is a song about the hell hounds of the mind - the phantoms of self-deception and self-destruction that impress themselves on the brain like a depressed Mount Rushmore. "Coward's Song" sets some lines from Richard III to a skeletal country waltz and was recently recorded by Bonnie "Prince" Billy. "I'm Not Hurting No More" sounds like poetry etched out by a pneumatic drill in an electrical storm, while album closer "Pass The Mask" is about the anxiety of childbearing by someone who has never borne a child - passing the relay baton of disappointment from generation to generation. It's Philip Larkin's head on Cat Stephen's body.

Featuring a consolidated line up of long-time collaborator Rory Haye, with Audrey Bizouerne (Rev Magnetic / Bill Wells) and Georgia Seddon (Mike Heron / The Incredible String Band) along with guest appearances from Shirley Collins and Stevie Jackson, ANDROMEDA is the first ghost rock album. Self loathing has never sounded so sexy.
