A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are traveling any distance.

Not listed?
A guide for Artists and Promoters
The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to rideout at stayfree.co.uk once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

Sat 1

Diesel Park West

£10

plus The Ian Derbyshire Band

www.dieselparkwest.com
Some bands belong to their own time, others trespass on decades where they don't really belong. Diesel Park West must have seemed to some people back in '89, with the release of the far-reaching Shakespeare Alabama, the most welcome and liberating guitar band anyone had heard for years. A lot of artists who have enjoyed massive acclaim and success since, may well tip hats towards the Diesels for being pioneers in the re-emergence of the guitar as the primary sound of contemporary music. Add to that song writing that both provokes and reassures... sometimes within the same lyric...then maybe its appropriate to start spreading the word.

Black River Bluesman & Bad Mood Hudson

plus Rockit Fuel
www.bluesman.fi

www.rockitfuel.co.uk

Jukka 'Black River Bluesman' Juhola & Andy 'Bad Mood' Hudson play their blues in the deep woods and frozen swamps of the muddy Black River Delta, way up North in cold Finland. Their unrefined, electric blues have been compared to the rough sounds of the Mississippi Hill Country artists as well as to anything between Deltahead and Black Keys, or psychoblues and garage. They are at their best when playing live on stage with their sound of a whole band. As one reviewer put it - "The best two-man trio I ever heard!"

"If Black Sabbath were blues artists, this is probably what they would sound like, especially if you throw a little Jim Morrison and Tom Waits into the mixture and stir occasionally with a little bit of Punk." - John Vermilyea, Canadian Blues Underground Network

The Kast Off Kinks

£10adv
kastoffkinks.co.uk

The iconic British rock band, The Kinks, are often cited as one of the most important and influential rock bands of all time. The Kast Off Kinks formed in 1994 to keep the music playing on, and it is what the name implies - the original line-up consisting of the band that played Lola (apart from Ray and Dave) - Avory, Dalton and Gosling - together with singer/guitarist Dave Clarke.

The current line-up is the band that played Come Dancing - Avory, Gibbons and Rodford (respectively the Kinks’ longest-serving drummer, keyboard player and bassist) - still with Dave Clarke covering for the Davies brothers.

Almost every other ex-Kink has guested with The Kast Off Kinks, including Ray Davies.

"Guitar and songwriting came later, but since I was as young as I can remember, singing was something that brought me so much happiness."

Brought up in Wiltshire on everything from Stax and Motown, to Folk, Rock 'N' Roll and Chicago Blues, Dani's soulful songs of joy, pain and sometimes anger at the world, bring blues and soul to a new generation.

Doktor Dyper Promotions presents...

Headspace + Haken

£10adv £12door

www.headspaceonline.com

www.haken.fr

In 2007, UK progressive rock band Headspace (featuring Adam Wakeman and award winning vocalist Damian Wilson) released the EP 'I Am'. They played a few (2 to be precise) shows and then decided that they could play Wembley as support for Ozzy Osbourne. In the five years after these shows they wrote and recorded the album that will be out on May 21st 2012 'I Am Anonymous'.

The title of the album has the finger pointed directly at the listener. It is about you and your relationship with humanity, ultimately the battles fought within the mind from child to man. Through Kubler Ross’ model of impending death, with reference to war, the turmoil leads us to peace and acceptance... only then to swing straight back round to chaos.

The band's line-up stabilised in mid-2010 with Maureen complimented by dual guitarists Kevin Hewick and Rizz James, dual bassists Dave Dhonau and Darren Baxter and cajon drummer Jim Tetlow. Darren's partner Helena McLeod has now joined as an additional vocalist after guesting on the Meditation Chamber album. Live performances are further augmented by the live painting and costumes of local artist Nick Nixon and the liquid light show of Lumiere Ogbanje to create a bizarre but infectiously memorable live experience.

Their work has met with critical praise from Rolling Stone and SPIN, both of which gave the band’s second and third albums four stars each, in addition to favourable reviews from Village Voice, NPR, Washington Post, Uncut, and many other press outlets.

Verden Allen & Soft Ground

Verden Allen is well known for his unique Hammond organ sound that made Mott The Hoople famous. After leaving MTH, Verden toured and recorded with many other projects, including The Cheeks, a band with Martin Chambers and Jimmy Scott before they left to form The Pretenders.

Soft Ground began in 2012 by recording a live session with BBC Radio 2's legendary Whispering Bob Harris, and are set to feature at the Cambridge Rock Festival this August.

Verden has recorded five solo albums, and is now playing as hard and heavy on that Hammond as he ever did, playing many old Mott classics along with his own material. The band, featuring Jamie Thyer on guitar and ex-Tigertailz drummer Matthew Blakout, won't fail to leave you feeling like you have been entertained... in the newly formed Soft Ground.

Grace & The Magic Roots

£5

plus Fay Brotherhood & Lee Burns and Green Children Of Wolfpit

www.graceandthemagicroots.comli.com

www.faybrotherhood.com

www.greenchildrenmusic.com

With their magical, captivating energy Grace & the Magic Roots bring a youthful and diverse sound to traditional inspired folk music. Full of dimensional variations, twisting time signatures, and haunting melodies, the songs are rich with layers of intertwining instrumentation, drawing on influence from roots reggae, klezmer, and good old English folk.

Grace's stories on subjects such as Scottish witches and the Devil are underpinned by the dynamic pulse of the musical accompaniment; Jennie on fiddle, Baz on guitar and Lawrence on cello.

Weaving tunes with the warp of folk tales into the weft of Grace's own joy and fear, this Leicester based acoustic string quartet will leave you feeling somewhat bewildered, and mystifyed.
