NOVEMBER 2007 LISTINGS     HOME

Thu 1
Catfish Keith
£10
www.catfishkeith.com
More than the sum of his widely varied influences (from Lonnie Johnson and Blind Lemon Jefferson to Buddy Bolden), Catfish Keith merges the traditional with the contemporary and loses nothing in the process. It's a tricky line to walk. Keith, with 20 years as a solo pro and half-dozen albums behind him, uses a largely original playing style - he picks, slaps, strums (sometimes all in the same passage) and plays a stone-solid bottleneck slide that compliments his clean, ebullient picking. His attention to detail tends to keep blues purists and guitar groupies alike happy, and his own originals stay fully within the tradition, unlike some others who tend to wander into earnest singer/songwriter territory as soon as they get a pen in hand.

Fri 2

Paul Barrere & Fred Tackett (Little Feat)
plus The Leen Valley Band
£12adv £15
www.littlefeat.net
As American as apple pie Little Feat’s music has transcended boundaries - a freewheeling fusion of California rock and Dixie-inflected funk-boogie - since 1969. Still one of the hardest working bands in show biz, today’s Little Feat is a seven-member powerhouse that ably carries on the group’s tradition. Past collaborators have included Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Beck, Brian Wilson, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Plant and John Lee Hooker. Tonight long time Feat members Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett bring some acoustical Little Feat magic to The Musician.

Pat Travers Band
£12adv £15
www.pattravers.com
Canadian guitarist/vocalist Pat Travers served an apprenticeship on the Ontario/Quebec bar circuit with the legendary rock-a-billy star Ronnie Hawkins, whose band would later become "The Band." After moving to the UK in 1975 Pat signed a multi-album deal with Polydor. After releasing three UK, Pat was signed to Polydor USA, and in 1979, the live Go For What You Know album yielded up the huge radio classic "Boom Boom Out Go The Lights." The follow-up, 1980’s Crash And Burn album yielded Pat’s signature song "Snortin’ Whiskey”. After taking a break from recording in the mid-late 80’s Pat returned to the studio in 1992 and released Blues Tracks. Pat’s undiminished popularity guarantees that he will always be recording or performing live somewhere in the world.

Tom Pacheco
plus Lisa Richards

Tom Pacheco
A frequent visitior to these shores and troubadour in the truest sense, Tom Patcheco's frequently brilliant songs, have been covered by countless folk and country artists. He has also recorded scores of albums in a career spanning over thirty years. Arguably his finest is 1997's, Woodstock Winter, produced by Band guitarist Jim Weider. The album was tracked at Levon Helm's studio and featured guest shots by several members of The Band, including Helm and Rick Danko. Although critically acclaimed, Woodstock Winter failed to find the large audience it deserved and although Tom has remained successful in Europe, he is virtually unknown in America, which is highly ironic, because Pacheco's voice and vision are as timelessly American (and at times as political) as Woody Guthrie.

Lisa Richards
Lisa Richards was born in Australia then moved to New York City and then to Austin, TX. Richards has been compared to Bjork, Billy Holliday, and Lucinda Williams. Lisa has toured in many parts of the
United States and Australia receiving critical kudos from the likes of Billboard and Relix along the way.
She has just released her 4th CD titled "Mad Mad Love", which Americana UK calls "a superb collection of songs". Other Reviewers of her work have called her music "Spunky, brash, wise, and her voice "stunning' and "incomparable".
This will be her first appearance at The Musician.

Howard Smith & The Razors
£6
www.howardsmith.co.uk
It’s always a pleasure to have red-hot, local guitar ace Howard Smith and his hard drivin’ Razors down at The Musician. Combing the no-frill’s, blue collar r’n’b of killer British combo’s such as The Inmates and Doctor Feelgood with the greasy slide work of Ry Cooder, Sonny Landreth and Lowell George, Howard and the boys are one of the rockin’-ist little blues bands in the country. Tight as hell, yet as loose as the proverbial goose The Razors are always an exciting proposition live and shouldn’t be missed.

Slaid Cleaves

£8adv £10
www.slaid.com
"Cleaves, never known to be prolific or to knock out product, approaches his seventh album in 16 years with a purposefulness that transcends a mere shout-out to wordsmith friends. His choices are obscure, but meaningful, varied, sometimes stunning. He's drawn to traditional allusions and melodies, minimalist character studies, and to Austin, Texas, where many of the songwriters covered make their homes. If the arrangements are straight-up Americana, Cleaves' temperate, sly grin of a voice finds comic insight between all the wistfully down-and-out lines. Like Nanci Griffith on Other Voices, Other Rooms, Cleaves takes the measure of influences which are more contemporary than historic, and as a result, captures the spirit of a lively if largely underground folk scene." - Shanta Thake

Fri 30
Aynsley Lister Band
plus Oli Brown Band
£10
www.aynsleylister.co.uk
In a world full of manufactured over-hyped pop music, Aynsley Lister is proof that there is light at the end of the tunnel. His powerful, infectious songs are unashamedly blues influenced and performed with the kind of conviction of someone twice his age. Say the word blues to a commercial record company and see how far they run! But Lister carries on regardless, writing and recording albums that continue to sell and prove that blues rock music can be commercial and have you singing along to yourself days after you hear it, just like half the committee written stuff you hear every day on the radio. Exceptionally mature and exciting. – Mojo. Superb - The Times.

A word about our listings
A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management. The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice.

We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week. Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are traveling any distance.

A guide for Artists and Promoters

The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email directly to Paul at listings@mohawkvisuals.com once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending.

Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please drop a line to Paul at listings@mohawkvisuals.com
