A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are traveling any distance.

Not listed?
A guide for Artists and Promoters
The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to rideout at once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at

Nell Bryden

£10adv £12door

plus Sam Bradley

Nell Bryden sings from the heart and shoots from the hip. The songstress from Brooklyn has the urban lifestyle in her blood, the country/folk spirit of Americana in her soul, and the great American songbook in her head.

Love and loss are the fuel that lights her songwriting fire. Rhythm and melody come as naturally to her as a morning latte in a Greenwich Village café. And a well-travelled journey through life provides a rich seam of experience to mine.

A native New Yorker with a fondness for old-time music and vintage clothes, she's seen the world and absorbed its musical influences: country and jazz, blues and soul, and more besides. You can hear as much of it – or as little – as you care to find in her music. Because, for all its familiar scents and flavours, her songs are distinctly her own.

The Jeffrey Lewis and Peter Stampfel Band

plus The Wave Pictures

The Jeffrey Lewis & Peter Stampfel Band hits the UK in May 2013, with a new album in tow!  Songwriter and visual artist Jeffrey Lewis is renowned for his six albums of twisted garage-indie-folk on Rough Trade, while Grammy winner Peter Stampfel now celebrates 50(!) years of making totally off-the-wall folk music, most famously with the Holy Modal Rounders and the Fugs (in addition to being featured on the Easy Rider soundtrack, and more notable albums and collaborations than you’d care to count).

Although forty years apart in age, these two New Yorkers share an obsession with both comic books and songs, as well as a collaborative history that has spawned some of the most unexpected and delightful music of recent years! A tour from this pair (and their full 5-piece band, including Franic of the Wave Pictures on mandolin) is an event not to be missed.

Blueswamp Southern play classic acoustic guitar and harp driven blues and roots, superb musicians and great songs. Sat 8

Larry Miller Band

plus Motherlode and The Honey Bees

After picking up his brother's guitar and writing his first song, he felt his future lay in Rock music, being influenced by some of the guitar greats - Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Gary Moore. "For me, my moment of inspiration was seeing Rory Gallagher live, I had never experienced anything like it. So loud, so gloriously on the edge of total mayhem, yet Rory was still totally in control. How could I not do this too! Like Rory I'd work under my own name, with a band. I'd do all the writing, singing, producing, playing and leading."

Very quickly, Larry found his own Blues/Rock style, and has been constantly refining it. He is a guitarist, singer, songwriter, with a love for his music which is simply infectious.

For nearly 35 years, Steve Howe has been at the forefront of guitarists in popular music. Actually, simply referring to Howe as a just a guitarist is limiting. In addition to being a songwriter, he plays more instruments than just the guitar. If it has strings and a fretboard, Howe has mastered it and recorded with it at some point on one of countless albums he's been a part of as a group member, solo artist and special guest.

Sproatly Smith + Rapunzel & Sedayne
£8adv £10door

A double bill of two of the most exciting and innovative acts in the folk scene.

Incorporating traditional folk, found sounds and English psychedelia into their music, Sproatly Smith are denizens of the folklore-soaked borderlands of Herefordshire.

Their sound world of bucolic, psychedelic folk, referencing late 'sixties Floyd, Circulus and Gorkys, is a joy to listen to. Original, engaging, marvellous." - Terrascope

"A thing of beauty... Exposure to the Sproatly Smith sound couldn’t come soon enough. It’s folk music alright, but not as we know it."
- God Is In The TV

Based in Fleetwood, Lancashire, husband and wife duo Rapunzel & Sedayne, aka Rachel McCarron and Sean Breadin, met through music, and found themselves singing together before they’d actually spoken to each other.

"So much more than just keepers of the flame, Rapunzel & Sedayne's 'Songs From The Barley Temple' is living and breathing folk art." - (Spiral Earth)

"One of the best, most intriguing, simultaneously fascinating and entertaining debuts out of the UK folk scene in a long time." - fRoots

Wizz Jones

£7adv £8door

plus Steve Hicks

Inspired by hearing Big Bill Broozy and Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Wizz learnt his guitar licks from the likes of Davy Graham and Long John Baldry whilst playing in the coffee bars of London's Soho in the late 1950s.

He then followed the time-honoured buskers' trail from the streets of Paris to the markets of Marrakech during the early 1960s and returned to Britain with a unique acoustic guitar style, an eclectic repetoire and a 'right hand worthy of Broonzy'!

John Renbourn, Eric Clapton and Keith Richards have all named him as an important early influence and after more than 50 years 'on the road', Wizz continues to tour on the acoustic folk and blues circuit, usually solo but sometimes with his son Simeon on sax, flute and harmonica.

Fri 21

Diesel Park West

Some bands belong to their own time, others trespass on decades where they don't really belong. Diesel Park West must have seemed to some people back in '89, with the release of the far-reaching Shakespeare Alabama, the most welcome and liberating guitar band anyone had heard for years. A lot of artists who have enjoyed massive acclaim and success since, may well tip hats towards the Diesels for being pioneers in the re-emergence of the guitar as the primary sound of contemporary music. Add to that song writing that both provokes and reassures... sometimes within the same lyric... then maybe its appropriate to start spreading the word.

Sinnerboy (Rory Gallagher Tribute)

Playing live is what Sinnerboy do best. Anyone who has seen them will tell you, it's all about energy and passion, strong songs played with verve. But how else could you approach playing Rory's music?

Their repertoire numbers over forty songs (and rising), with material from every stage of Rory's career including his early days with Taste. Bullfrog Blues, Walk On Hot Coals, Tattooed Lady, Shadow Play, Moonchild and many more are the essential ingredients of every Sinnerboy set.

For Sinnerboy, keeping the music of Rory Gallagher alive for people who love to hear it, is all that matters, but don't look for three guys on stage poncing about in wigs trying to look like three other guys, what you get with this band is all out passionate Rory Gallagher music!

plus Sunjay Brayne and Howlin' Mat

An enigmatic personality and larger than life showman, Canadian Matt Andersen has been earning fervent reaction from audiences across the globe these last few years. Matt has also toured the U.S. and Europe with America, Randy Bachman, Bo Diddley, Little Feat and a host of others.

Thu 27

Nick Harper

plus John Butler (Diesel Park West)

Son of the legendary UK singer-songwriter Roy Harper, Nick was born in London and raised in Wiltshire. Having played the guitar from the age of 10 and surrounded by the likes of Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Dave Gilmour as he grew up, it was no surprise when Nick made his recording debut on his father's 'Whatever Happened to Jugula?' in 1985.

Nick's talent and energy entranced Roy's fans and it was inevitable that he would begin touring and recording in his own right. The 1994 EP 'Light At The End Of The Kennel' was swiftly followed by his powerful 1995 debut long player 'Seed' prompting The Independent to describe him as "hugely talented".

To call Nick a superlative singer/songwriter could put his highly lauded guitar talent in the shade, and to call him a guitarist's guitarist might slight his distinctive, soulful voice and passionate songs. Not forgetting the wild ride that is one of his live shows - from personal introspection to biting political satire via a charmingly caustic wit that would make Groucho Marx proud.
