A word about our listings

A guide for Customers

These days artists and bands tend to book their tours months in advance. In order to give you the best notice of up and coming shows we list events once they have been confirmed by the band or their management

The downside of this is that dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes at very short notice. We do our best to ensure that this site is kept as up to date as is possible, with updates happening at least once a week.

Therefore to avoid disappointment we recommend that you check these listing prior to setting out for your show especially if you are traveling any distance.

Not listed?
A guide for Artists and Promoters
The quickest way to get yourself included in our listings is to send an email to rideout at stayfree.co.uk once your gig is confirmed.

We also need you to do the following -

Put the name of the artist or band name along with the date of your show in the email subject line.

Attach a reasonable sized photograph. A 72dpi, jpeg, bigger than 200x200 pixels would be fine. Please don't email files over 1mb in size. If in doubt please drop us a line before sending. Let us have your web address so we can link to your site or Myspace page.

Send us some text. Whilst we are happy to tidy up spelling or grammar, we don't have the time to write or edit copy for you. Ideally we need a nice concise 'blurb' of between 75-100 words. Please don't send a three page biography, or else we are likely to bounce it back to you. If you have a selection of press quotes send what you have as we can usually easily compile something from them. There are plenty of examples of the sort of thing we need here on the site to help you out.

Please note - If you have played at The Musician before and we have text on file, we will continue to use use it for any subsequent listings unless you supply new copy.

If you spot any errors please send an email to derek at indiecentral.co.uk.

Jim Suhler & Monkey Beat (George Thorogood & The Destroyers)

£7adv

www.jimsuhler.com

Blasting out Texas blues/rock for over twenty years! Along with Suhler on guitar and lead vocals, the band includes bassist Carlton Powell, keyboardist Shawn Phares and drummer Beau Chadwell. Together, they've been terrorizing clubs, theaters and festivals alike with their flamethrower brand of blues/rock, with a major side order of the Texas border mythology added to keep it spicy!

The same take-no-prisoners attitude has prevailed in Jim Suhler's playing as a guitarist with George Thorogood and the Destroyers, with whom he's recorded, toured and written songs for over ten years. Suhler has often been included in many of the "Top Ten Guitarists" lists featured in several music publications.

Dawson Smith & The Dissenters

£5

plus No Way Back

www.dawsonsmith.com

Welsh-born frontman Dawson Smith formed the Dissenters in 2005 with the aim of forming his dream ‘road band’ able to deliver the type of driving swamp blues and rootsy Americana bar room rock 'n' roll that has always been the backdrop to his distinctive song-writing. The depth of the band is such that it is not easy to describe how they sound. Comparisons with Los Lobos, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steve Earle, John Hiatt, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, (and more) are usual and much welcomed.

"Dawson & The Dissenters take you on a whirlwind trip through the best in rockin’ blues and roots and bring you back breathless!" – Americana UK

"Two successful tours with Nashville rocker Tommy Womack (backing and supporting) and gigs with Dan Baird & Homemade Sin (Georgia Satellites), now the yanks are taking Dawson Smith & The Dissenters seriously!" – Bob Paterson BPM Radio.

All are drawn to his thoughtful and intelligent songs, his tough rocking music and and his legendary full-on live shows. The subject of much critical acclaim, he is described by Rolling Stone as “in a genre of his own” and the Washington Post as “a maker of ageless rock’n’roll.”

Nolan Porter with Stone Foundation

£12adv

plus djook DJ

www.stonefoundation.co.uk

Northern Soul legend Nolan Porter broke onto the recording scene in the early 70’s after appearing on the top US music TV show ‘Soul Train’. Even though the release of his solo recordings only spanned a period of 2 years, the quality of his work has had a lasting influence down the years. “Keep On Keeping On” as well as being covered by a UK indie group and has since influenced/been sampled by further British outfits. More recently Paul Weller cut a new version of “If I Could Only Be Sure”. Both of these recordings have remained firm favourites with UK soul fans and so it is only fitting that Nolan will finally get the chance to perform both songs live on a visit to these shores.

Blushing Melons & Greenman Rising

£8adv £10door

www.blushing-melons.com

www.greenmanrising.co.uk

Blushing Melons play folk rock with songwriters' attitudes – the band find themselves in an endless search for human landscapes, and as endless deserts and dusty plains are not exactly abundant in their homeland Austria: gardens and cities remain the only alternative, expressed by rumbling scarecrow songs, melody-drunken allegories and a contagious folky carnival. The Blushing Melons already played as support act to bands such as the Oysterband and Hugo Race (Dirt Music, Nick Cave). Wonderful musicians; creative people; verve-full in all respects.

Greenman Rising are an exciting Midlands-based nine piece folk rock band that will defintely get your feet tapping and the rest of the body is guaranteed to follow.

Derrin Nauendorf

www.derrinnauendorf.com

Renowned for his intense live shows and raw emotive music, Derrin Nauendorf’s music is hard to categorise, made up from many roots styles, blues, folk and Americana. Untamed acoustic guitar, cutting lyrics, a powerful, evocative voice and honest songs, delivered with passion, but twisted to a unique sound.

“First impressions? One Australian guy with an acoustic guitar and his mate with a homemade drum kit. What would you think? Me too. I then listened to his live album and Derrin, guitar, sidekick and drums proceeded to blow me away.” – David Blue, Net Rhythms

I See Hawks In L.A.

£7

www.iseehawks.com

“Southern California is a land of strange, dangerous and beautiful contrasts. A mountain lion prowls outside the tract home bedroom of a teenage girl while she talks, oblivious to its existence, on her cell phone. A rattlesnake slithers across an empty shopping mall parking lot on a hot summer night while the employees count up the days profit and turn out the lights. While paparazzi chase the latest talent free celebrity, a talented, literate bunch of soulful musicians create honest and wise roots music for the ages. I See Hawks are indeed one of California’s unique treasures.”

Bare Bones Boogie Band

£7adv £9door

plus Tony Alles

barebonesboogieband.com

The Bare Bones Boogie Band is a stripped-down, no nonsense blues band. Their vision is simple - to strip the music back to the bare essentials and build from there.

The bands' roots stem from the heavy, electric blues of the late 60s and early 70s, when bands like Free, Fleetwood Mac and the Stones were inspired by BB King and Robert Johnson, and Janis Joplin was re-inventing Etta James.

Live, they do not hold back nor apologies for their rawness nor their tenderness. They deliver heavy, soulful blues!

Thea Ford

www.theaford.com

April33 (Facebook)

www.beckyedwardsmusic.co.uk

"A stunning singing voice is the first thing to be ticked in the credit column of Thea Ford. The second and third ticks duly arrive by the fact that her songs are catchy and her lyrics are good. A recipe for a great pop album, then. Thea lists Alanis Morissette and Shakira as some of her influences and this shines through as there is an air of both singers about this release. Her debut album is very story driven, filled with passion and genuine sounding emotion, and there’s a real mix of lively pop and beautiful ballads. Thea is one to watch." - Cal Sherlock, The Crack Magazine

Edgar Broughton

£9adv £11door

plus Luke Broughton

www.edgarbroughton.com

Edgar Broughton, singer-songwriter and guitarist was a founder member of the Edgar Broughton Band in the 60's, a formidable live draw propelled by a heavy psychedelic blues sound and Edgar's phenomenal, if untutored, singing.

Edgar is well known as one of the most strident protest singers, but at times one of the most accessible. His involvement with political activism has continued down the years and many of his songs reflect this.

Once described as a proto-punk, his music is firmly rooted in the blues and tinged with echoes of European folk music. His solo performance is an emotive, entertaining tour de force containing both old favourites and new songs from the heart.

"What's wonderful about him performing acoustically is that with the guitar stepping back slightly, it gives one of rock music's most individual and striking voices the room it truly deserves." - Paul Broom - Midlandsrocks
